Job description

Our client is searching for a Director of Finance to join their team. This role will be responsible for overseeing key financial functions, including accounting, financial planning, analysis and reporting. A successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing the company’s financial excellence while building and mentoring a high-performing team. This role reports directly to the Senior Financial Officer and Executive Director of People, Planning & Performance Measurement.

Your success will be defined by your ability to :

  1. Support and implement the organization’s financial strategy to align with its business plan and goals
  2. Assist in the execution of initiatives aimed at improving financial performance and operational efficiency and effectiveness, supporting the SFO and ED’s strategic direction
  3. Provide insights for strategic financial planning and decision-support
  4. Collaborate with senior and operational leadership to evaluate and enhance financial performance
  5. Lead the execution of financial planning and forecasting, ensuring alignment with the company’s business plan
  6. Oversee the budgeting process to ensure alignment with organizational objective and the company’s financial health
  7. Prepare annual budgets and monitor progress to align with organizational priorities
  8. Conduct variance analysis, financial forecasting and risk assessment
  9. Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, assess performance and highlight areas for improvement
  10. Prepare financial management and discussion reports and briefing documents for Senior Leadership and Finance and Audit Committee
  11. Collaborate with the SFO and ED to monitor financial KPIs and identify risks and opportunities to achieve or exceed targets
  12. Ensure compliance with financial regulations and not-for-profit accounting standards
  13. Oversee daily financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions, accounting for capital and intangible assets, and accounting for a defined benefit pension fund to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance
  14. Maintain an effective financial control environment through financial policies and the company’s financial accounting system
  15. Manage treasury functions including cash flow monitoring, cash management practices and oversight of investments to optimize organizational financial health
  16. Drive functional process-mapping and improvement for efficient financial workflows
  17. Lead the coordination of annual audits, including pension fund audits, and liaise with external auditors
  18. Support audit preparation by coordinating the completion of draft financial statements and supporting documentation
  19. Maintain and enforce financial policies and procedures and guidelines, including delegation of signing authority, to ensure compliance and effective financial controls and operations
  20. Monitor and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and the company policies
  21. Identify financial risks and develop mitigation strategies
  22. Monitor the company’s investment portfolios and collaborate with the Planning, Risk and Procurement team on insurance policies
  23. Lead a high-performing, collaborative finance team to deliver value-added processes and business advisory services
  24. Promote professional development and succession planning within the team
  25. Champion process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial workflows
  26. Prepare and deliver monthly and quarterly financial reports and financial communications to support decision-making and achieve organizational objectives
  27. Act as a strategic partner to business units, providing financial guidance to drive informed decisions
  28. Communicate financial results and strategies to interested parties
  29. Support the organization in financial discussions with external partners.

Your strengths include :

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or Finance
  2. Chartered Professional Accountant Designation is required
  3. 10+ years of experience in financial management with demonstrated success in leading finance operations, accounting and analytics
  4. 5+ years of experience leading a team of financial professionals with a collaborative and mentorship-oriented approach
  5. Strong understanding of not-for-profit environments, with experience in regulatory environments considered an asset
  6. Strong knowledge of accounting standards, regulatory compliance, financial reporting and analytical models, including for a single-employer pension fund
  7. Proven ability to analyze financial data, identify trends and provide actionable insights to support decision-making
  8. Experience in developing and maintaining financial policies and control environments to ensure compliance and integrity
  9. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver financial communications, including management reports and decision documents tailored or diverse groups
  10. Familiarity with ERP systems, with experience in Sage Intacct is an asset
  11. High proficiency in MS365 applications, virtual meeting platforms, and intermediate to advance Excel and PowerPoint skills
  12. Inspire and mentor the team to achieve high performances
  13. Deliver actionable insights through financial data interpretation
  14. Clearly convey financial strategies to diverse groups
  15. Ensure accuracy and compliance in all financial reporting
