Position: Safety Specialist - Construction

Position Summary:

Trillium HealthWorks is leading Canada's largest health infrastructure renewal plan, including the construction of a new patient care tower at The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, scheduled for completion in 2029. The project involves significant site development and hospital expansion activities. As part of this initiative, Trillium HealthWorks seeks an experienced Safety Specialist to ensure a safe workplace environment by managing occupational health and safety programs, compliance, hazard assessments, and safety training.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Understand operational environments related to THP and Trillium HealthWorks.
  • Develop partnerships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement and sustain health and safety programs.
  • Develop, communicate, implement, and evaluate occupational health and safety programs; revise them based on audit results to ensure legislative compliance.
  • Support management of construction and contractor safety policies, including permit assessments, site inspections, contractor orientations, and related activities.
  • Conduct occupational hygiene services such as hazard assessments, air sampling, noise monitoring, and emergency response planning.
  • Identify workplace hazards, evaluate risks, and implement control measures to mitigate risks to staff and the organization.
  • Provide ongoing education, advice, and support on health and safety matters to leadership and staff.
  • Create and deliver safety training and documentation as needed.
  • Monitor legislation changes, analyze trends, and update policies to maintain compliance and best practices.
  • Track safety metrics and report on performance.
  • Recommend and implement policies to improve operational safety and efficiency.
  • Investigate safety incidents, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Represent THP in dealings with regulatory agencies and coordinate responses to inspections or orders.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Key Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant occupational health and safety experience, including managing construction safety programs.
  • Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Safety Technician (CRST).
  • Experience in healthcare settings is an asset.
  • Specialization in occupational hygiene or ergonomics is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, healthcare laws, and environmental laws.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Strong relationship management and influencing skills.
  • Ability to lead change and promote safety culture.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and technical writing.
  • Flexible working hours as required by construction projects.
  • Valid Class G Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
