Job summary

Emterra Group is seeking a Safety, Risk & Compliance Specialist to join our BC team. The role focuses on strengthening safety culture, developing and maintaining health and safety programs, and supporting COR certification and ISO 45001 initiatives across our operations.

You will lead audits, inspections, training, and incident investigations, partner with site leaders, and ensure regulatory compliance, records accuracy, and continuous improvement. Travel between BC sites is required.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in health & safety role, multi-site preferred.
  • Post-secondary OH&S education or equivalent.
  • Valid COR certification is required.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 systems, including implementation and auditing.
  • Experience with audits, inspections, hazard assessments, and risk assessments.
  • Excellent English communication in writing and speaking.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Health & Safety management systems, programs, policies, and procedures across the organization.
  • Lead COR audits and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement and optimize ISO 45001 aligned processes and documentation.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections and risk assessments at sites across BC.
  • Coach site leaders and support Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Deliver effective health & safety training and maintain safety records.

We are currently searching for a Safety, Risk & Compliance Specialist to join our BC team at Emterra Group. The Health & Safety Specialist will play a key role in strengthening and advancing our safety culture by supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health and safety management systems across our operations. This role will provide leadership, guidance, and technical support to operational managers and supervisors in implementing company safety programs, processes, and initiatives.

The position reports to the Director of Health & Safety/Risk.

Position Description
  • Support the ongoing development, implementation, and maintenance of company-wide Health & Safety management systems, programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Support the organization’s COR certification requirements, including audit preparation, documentation review, corrective action tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement, maintain, and improve Health & Safety processes aligned with ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System standards.
  • Conduct safety audits, workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and compliance reviews to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with operational leaders to develop and implement location-specific safety processes, procedures, and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and complete Health & Safety records and documentation to meet regulatory and company requirements.
  • Review accident/incident reporting, identify trends, and provide guidance in developing and sustaining corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Manage Health & Safety data, reporting, and trend analysis for assigned sites.
  • Support incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.
  • Participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and provide guidance on safety initiatives.
  • Develop, update, and deliver employee Health & Safety training programs.
  • Maintain safety management software systems and reporting tools as required.
  • Identify hazards and unsafe work practices through site inspections, employee engagement, and operational knowledge.
  • Provide recommendations to improve safety performance and reduce workplace risks.
  • Maintain current knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulatory requirements, industry trends, and best practices
Skills And Qualifications
  • Proven ability to coach, influence, and build strong relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, and leadership teams.
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within a multi-site, industrial, transportation, manufacturing, or waste management environment.
  • Completion of post-secondary education from a recognized Occupational Health & Safety program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid COR (Certificate of Recognition) certification is required.
  • Experience supporting COR audits, maintaining certification requirements, and implementing corrective action plans.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, including implementation, documentation, auditing, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and improving Health & Safety programs, processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, hazard assessments, compliance reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • CRSP designation or progress toward certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with management teams in both unionized and non-unionized environments.
  • Experience supporting Joint Health and Safety Committees, safety training, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver effective safety training programs with strong presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language (both verbal and written).
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Experience in the waste industry, transportation, fleet, or manufacturing sectors is considered a strong asset.
  • Ability and willingness to travel between BC sites as required.
