Job summary

Aplin seeks an experienced Safety & Training Manager to lead Occupational Health & Safety and training across a large unionized transportation operation in Vancouver, BC.   • Post-secondary certificate or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of Occupational Health & Safety experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership or management experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with access to a personal vehicle for travel between worksites.
  • Strong knowledge of the Workers' Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC regulations, OH&S program management, incident investigations, occupational hygiene, claims management, and return-to-work programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, influence, and support managers, supervisors, employees, and Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee representatives.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while exercising sound judgement in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Health & Safety and Training function within a unionized operation.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Occupational Health & Safety programs, policies, and safe work practices.
  • Promote employee participation, leadership engagement, and recognition initiatives that strengthen workplace safety culture.
  • Act as the primary liaison with WorkSafeBC on policy and operational health and safety matters.
  • Partner with managers to identify safety risks, recommend practical solutions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage WorkSafeBC claims, return-to-work programs, and occupational injury management.
  • Conduct incident investigations, workplace inspections, risk assessments, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Monitor leading and lagging safety indicators, prepare performance reports, and present findings to leadership and Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committees.
  • Oversee curriculum design, training delivery, competency assessments, and documentation for frontline operational employees.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness planning and business continuity initiatives.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders while promoting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

An established and growing transportation services organization is seeking an experienced Safety & Training Manager to lead Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) and training initiatives within a large, unionized operation. This leadership opportunity combines strategic planning with hands‑on operational support to foster a proactive safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive continuous employee development.

About the Role

Reporting to senior leadership, you will provide leadership across all aspects of health, safety, and training while partnering with operational leaders to build and sustain a safe, compliant, and high-performing workplace.

Key Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within a unionized environment.
  • Professional safety designation such as CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CHSC (Canadian Health & Safety Consultant).
