DHL Express currently has an opening for aSafety Managerin our National Office in Brampton. The Safety Manager designs, leads and manages safety programs to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with safety and environmental health requirements. This role is also the primary contact for all occupational safety regulatory actions. They also lead the existing injury and accident prevention programs, develop cultural change initiatives, monitor compliance, conduct data analysis and recommend preventative actions.

How will you contribute to the success of DHL?

  • Acts as subject matter authority on all safety and related transportation related items, and actively ensures continual compliance and improvement.
  • Ensures full compliance with all the requirements of Safety Regulations as they apply and actively ensures continual improvement using the established systems and processes.
  • Program management lead for all Safety related initiatives and enhancements.
  • Handle Safety resources. When necessary, plan and assist in the training, onboarding and hiring of new personnel.
  • Ensure implementation of the organizations Safety First Framework across all locations/areas.
  • Work within the corporate framework to develop career growth of direct reports.
  • Ensures appropriate and professional provision of Safety support to the Leadership team to ensure safety compliance, incident prevention and safety culture development.
  • Serve as the primary contact on health and safety issues or sensitive claims.
  • Work as the internal incident manager, ensuring that safety emergencies and injuries are properly handled.
  • Track and analyze incident trends and communicate target specific recommendations for improved safety performance to Leadership.
  • Has oversight of worker's compensation claims profile and provides updates to Leaders. Supports claims reviews.
  • Is responsible for risk assessment process and provides support in developing safe operating procedures.
  • Supervises hazard prevention program and provides support in developing safe operating procedures
  • Oversight of all continuing safety programs (e.g. CCC, Fleet Telematics, iCARE)
  • Leads serious incident investigations to resolve root cause and target procedural, instructional or equipment changes to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure suitable reporting processes are established and maintained in a timely and professional manner.
  • Establish and achieve significant and effective communications with all relevant parties, both internally and externally. Develop good working relationships with all relevant parties.
  • Lead the National Safety Policy Committee and member of the Americas Regional Safety Committee.
  • Ensure Safety committees are effective at all applicable locations.
  • Promote the DHL safety culture, values and Guiding Principles.

Accountabilities & Key Tasks:

  • Monitor, review and interpret existing and proposed changes to occupational H&S regulations, Leadership / Training / Communication / Initiatives.
  • Conducts inspections and assessments to evaluate the business performance in relation to Corporate H&S directives, guidelines and regulatory requirement.
  • Support risk assessment program, provide assistance, training and advice.
  • Run the I-CARE safety management software and ensure incident reporting in accordance to local and DHL guidelines.
  • Report on H&S incidents to Country SMT and Head of Regional Health & Safety.
  • Lead investigation for H&S incidents and recommend control measures.
  • Design, implement and conduct H&S training and PD sessions on a regular basis.
  • Analyze H&S statistics to determine trends and assist in identifying priorities for action.
  • Ensure timely reporting of monthly/quarterly/annual site reports per local, regional and global DHL requirements.
  • Ensure timely reporting of daily and annual reports to Canadian Labour Program.
  • Ensure effective H&S committee and communication systems are implemented at country level.
  • Leads business initiative to achieve external H&S certifications. (e.g., ISO 45001)
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans and serve as the emergency coordinator for major events.
  • Develop working relationships and open communication at all levels including third-party implementing authorities and emergency services.
  • Working with Engineering, suppliers, local management and staff to perform risk assessments on all proposed and new processes and equipment prior to and post implementation or installation.

Management Responsibility:

  • Member of the National Safety Policy Committee, and Americas Regional Safety Committee - to promote a positive safety culture to all partners.
  • Support Country Manager, Head of Regional Safety and all Management Team and employees in operating a safe working environment.
  • Participate in business leadership team in the annual budgeting, planning, corporate H&S governance, auditing, management system, standard process exchanges and compliance initiatives.
  • Assists business leadership in establishing objectives and metrics in alignment with company H&S goals and initiatives.
  • Provide mentorship and development to business leadership.
  • Ability to recognize strategic opportunities and focus H&S resources to meet critical business needs, understand organizational dynamics and possess exceptional social skills.

Health and Safety:

  • Lead a proactive safety culture
  • Adherence to all return-to-work plan recommendations
  • As far as reasonably practicable, ensure the health & safety and welfare of workers under their direction or control.
  • As far as reasonably practicable, ensure the health and safety of others who may be present in the workplace such as customers, visitors, and clients.
  • That all regulations, procedures and safe work practices are implemented and always followed.
  • Provide relevant information, toward ensuring workers have relevant information, training, instruction, and assessment to enable them to complete the planned activities in a safe manner
  • Implement and monitor compliance of workplace health and safety policies, procedures and safety rules in their area of control
  • Employees within their area of responsibility participate in work health and safety training programs as directed by DHL
  • Inspiration of appropriate attitudes towards work health and safety
  • Identify, eliminate or control hazards and risks in work areas as per the risk assessment procedure and hazard prevention program.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Must possess leadership skills. Seasoned professional, self-starting, analytical and energetic.

  • Experience in developing and implementing safety programs.
  • Hold or be working towards externally accredited safety certification is desirable (e.g. CRSP, CSP, ASP or equivalent).
  • DHL or other transportation operations experience is an asset.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; Power Point, EXCEL, Word, Outlook, Teams and other related computer software
  • Excellent communication skills, public speaking and training facilitation
  • English and French fluency preferred.
  • Must take ownership for all safety related issues and have a “can do” and collaboration style.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or diploma with focus on Occupational Health and Safety or related field, is desirable.
  • At least 5 years in leading a safety management system and experience relevant to the work carried out by a Safety Manager.
  • Basic audit capabilities, investigation skills, risk assessment and hazard identification
  • Strong leadership, training, analytical, project management and people development skills
  • Experience in handling compliance issues, regulatory reviews, reporting and record keeping.
  • Ability to effectively communicate across multiple levels of the organization
