Job description

At Volker Stevin, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a commitment to our people, our projects, and the communities we serve. We’re on a mission to elevate our safety culture through connection, clarity, and collaboration. As a Safety Engagement Specialist, you will help shape this transformation. If you’re passionate about clear communication, effective change management, and making a lasting impact, we want to hear from you.

Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety & Environment, you will play a pivotal role in leading communications, engagement, and change strategies that support the successful adoption of a renewed safety vision. You will help integrate our strategic safety plan into field operations and corporate systems alike, ensuring it’s understood, embraced, and sustained. This is a 9-month contract position, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance.

How You’ll Add Value
  • Lead the development and coordination of implementation plans, timelines, and milestones aligned with our safety transformation strategy.
  • Collaborate across departments to manage risks, track progress, and overcome roadblocks.
  • Support the creation and delivery of toolkits, rollout plans, and adoption tracking tools.
  • Act as the central communications lead for the safety program, ensuring consistent, clear, and compelling messaging.
  • Partner with corporate communications to align safety messaging with broader strategic efforts.
  • Develop internal updates, presentations, and materials tailored for diverse audiences—from executives to frontline workers.
  • Help craft communications that resonate with field-based teams and drive buy-in.
  • Work closely with HS&E, Operations, People & Culture, and training teams to align execution.
  • Gather feedback from supervisors and field leaders to understand challenges and refine messaging.
  • Support internal champions and site-level ambassadors as they roll out new tools and practices.
  • Drive organizational readiness by building change strategies that foster trust and reduce resistance.
  • Highlight early wins and use storytelling to reinforce progress and cultural shifts.
  • Help leaders deliver messages that connect with and motivate their teams.
  • Align training activities with communication efforts to create a unified approach.
  • Ensure consistency of tone, message, and intent across all onboarding and training materials.
  • Collaborate with IT and communications teams to deploy messaging through various systems and channels.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
  • 7+ years of experience in change management, internal communications, program coordination, or a related field.
  • Background working in or supporting safety and compliance within industrial or construction environments.
  • Experience connecting with and engaging frontline workers—ideally within construction, oil & gas, or other industrial settings.
  • Proven track record delivering enterprise-wide initiatives with multiple stakeholders and moving parts.
  • Exceptional communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to simplify complex ideas.
  • Willingness to travel between Calgary, Lethbridge, and Fort McMurray (day trips or occasional overnight), and spend time on-site at construction locations.
  • Familiarity with health and safety frameworks, legislation, systems, and best practices is an asset.
  • Experience managing change in matrixed organizations (e.g., post-merger/integration environments) is a strong asset.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Suite and the ability to learn and leverage digital tools across platforms.
