Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of OHS legislation across multiple Canadian provinces, with familiarity with Alberta regulations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in a multi-province, retail, facility, or cannabis/liquor environment.
  • Familiarity with incident management systems or HRIS platforms.
  • Experience with Workers' Compensation claims management and return-to-work programs.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate retail accidents, near-misses, and injuries to determine root causes and implement preventative measures.
  • Manage Worker Compensation (WCB) claims from inception through completion, liaising with injured workers and WCB case workers.
  • Support return-to-work programs in collaboration with management and impacted employees.
  • Provide health and safety training and guidance to employees across the organization.
  • Advise leaders and frontline staff on OHS and WCB matters and foster a safety-conscious culture.

About The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Safety, the Safety Coordinator supports day-to-day health and safety operations across all business segments and provinces — from British Columbia to New Brunswick. Based in Edmonton or remote, this role works collaboratively with the Health and Safety team, corporate leaders, retail management, and frontline staff to promote effective health and safety practices throughout the organization.

Edmonton Corporate Office

The successful candidate will handle a variety of health and safety and administrative functions, including claims and file management, maintaining training materials and forms, and managing the shared H&S inbox.

Critical skills for this position include a high level of professional discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality, strong attention to detail and accuracy, and excellent organizational and time management skills. The ideal candidate will work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate adaptability and a positive, proactive attitude to support evolving business needs.

Legislative Compliance & Governance
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal and provincial OHS acts, regulations, and codes across all operating regions.
  • Ensure company policies and procedures align with legislative and industry standards.
Incident Investigation & Claims Management
  • Investigate retail accidents, near-misses, and injuries to determine root causes and implement preventative measures.
  • Manage Worker Compensation (WCB) claims from inception through completion, acting as the liaison between the injured worker, management, and the WCB case worker.
  • Support and coordinate return-to-work programs in collaboration with management and impacted employees.
  • Assist with leaves and claims management in accordance with applicable legislation.
Advisory & Safety Culture
  • Advise business leaders and frontline staff on health and safety-related topics, providing sound guidance on OHS and WCB matters.
  • Work with Directors of Operations and retail managers to foster a safety-conscious workplace culture with a focus on prevention.
  • Support Operations and senior management with OHS and WCB decision-making, including recommendations, supporting data, and feedback.
  • Provide health and safety training and guidance to employees across the organization.
Reporting, Tracking & Records Management
  • Monitor key safety performance indicators and report findings to management to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and update health and safety records, training materials, and forms in an organized and accurate manner.
  • Manage the shared H&S inbox and provide timely responses and follow-up.
  • Create and maintain training documents, ensuring all materials are branded and up to date with current OHS legislative information.
  • Draft and complete both internal and external regulatory forms when applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
