The City of Chestermere is seeking a dedicated Safety Codes Technician to support the Community Growth and Infrastructure team. You will manage permit processing, data records, inspection scheduling, and minor plan reviews to ensure compliance with the Safety Codes Act, the National Building Code - Alberta Edition, and the City's Quality Management Plan.

You will provide exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders, prepare release packages, and maintain confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Office Administration or Architectural Technology or equivalent is considered an asset.
  • 3-5 years administrative experience in municipal settings is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of Alberta Safety Codes and Municipal Land Use Bylaw regulations is an asset.

  • Coordinate building permit-related activities and review safety code permit applications for completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare complete permit release packages and update permit records after revisions.
  • Enter permit and inspections data in the C-DAS system and issue permits where authorized.

Job description

Position Summary

As a member of the Community Growth and Infrastructure team, the Safety Codes Technician provides technical support regarding Safety Code activities and applications in support of the municipality’s overall operations and development. This includes, but is not limited to managing the processing and recording of all Safety Code permits, keeping data records of all activities relating to construction covered under the Safety Codes Act, organizing inspection schedules, performing minor building plan reviews and issue Safety Code related permits, overseeing preparation of building permit release packages, including actively preparing packages when required and ensuring high quality customer service with regards to permits to all internal and external stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provides technical support in the implementation and continuous improvement of:
  • Coordination of building permit-related activities reviews all types of safety codes permit applications for completeness and accuracy and ensures it meets the requirements of the Safety Codes Act. Prepares a complete application package for Building Safety Codes Officer review and issuance.
  • Prepares all safety codes permit release packages and is responsible for updating permit records in case of revision submissions and keeps a record of final approvals.
  • Responsible for data entry of permit and inspections data using C-DAS system; issues permit where authorized.
  • Organizes, verifies and emails occupancy documentation for Safety Codes Officers, Permit Holders, owners and occupants.
  • Assists in pulling up building statistics reports and publishing them when necessary.
  • Coordinating inspections: organizes safety codes inspections, assigns and schedules plan reviews and inspections, maintains performance standards; checks results to ensure prompt high‑quality service; ensures copies of permits are available for inspection agencies on a daily basis and that database records are provided to and received from inspection agencies on a weekly basis; reviews accuracy of monthly reports for payments to the inspection agencies.
  • Assisting and supporting all Safety Codes Officer on all administrative/ office related matters, including but not limited to: organizing paperwork, scanning, requesting information, processing Verifications of Compliances, etc.
  • Customer service and support: provides exceptional customer service to clients; maintains professionalism by providing best practice recommendations and solutions to both internal and external clients; provides educational resources to clients, ensuring resources are available at the front desk; follows up with clients; works with inspection agencies to ensure adequate staffing coverage during holidays, illness, etc.
  • This position is responsible for the life safety of all buildings through compliance monitoring in accordance with the Safety Codes Act, the National Building Code - Alberta Edition and the City’s Quality Management Plan.
  • Works with Safety Codes inspection agencies to ensure adequate staffing coverage during holidays, sickness, etc., when required under the supervision of the Chief Building Safety Codes Officer.
  • Represents the City externally, acts as the liaison to industry and members of the public.
  • Appropriate and responsible use of confidential information; maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the city.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participates in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.
  • Participates as a member of the Chestermere Emergency Response team in preparing and enabling the community to respond in the event of a local or regional disaster.

Required Education And Experience
  • Diploma in Office Administration or Architectural Technology; Certificate in Applied Land Use Planning; or other relevant post-secondary education is considered an asset.
  • 3-5 years administrative experience.
  • Experience in a municipal building services or construction environment is considered an asset.
  • Basic Knowledge of Alberta Safety Codes and Municipal Land Use Bylaw regulations, with an ability to read permit drawings, is considered an asset.
Required Certifications And/or Documentation
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence and Drive’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.

  • Competency in reviewing applications for completeness and compliance with permit bylaw, Quality Management Plan, and National Building Code - Alberta Edition 2019.
  • Ability to adhere to frequent deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with public in a positive, facilitative and pleasant manner.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access).

Compensation: Pay Grade will be determined by position placement.

Pay: $32.56/Hr. (you'll find the detailed information in Appendix A of the draft collective agreement)
