Our Operations & Safety team is seeking 2 Safety Assurance Specialists to help shape the future of safe public transit across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. In this pivotal role, you’ll evaluate system safety performance, lead assessments, and drive continuous improvement across major capital and operational projects—GO Expansion, LRTs, Subways, and more.
What will I be doing?
- Lead and execute structured safety certification activities across the project lifecycle in alignment with CENELEC EN 50126 and CMREA requirements.
- Review System Safety Plans, System Assurance Plans, Safety Case Reports, and Verification & Validation (V&V) Matrices to assess completeness and compliance with certification milestones.
- Analyze Structured Hazard Assessments (e.g., PHA, SHA, IHA) and ensure traceability through Hazard Logs and Risk Registers, in accordance with accepted risk management practices.
- Coordinate with Independent Safety Assessors (ISAs) to facilitate certification reviews, audits, and assessments.
- Monitor compliance with the Canadian Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CMREA) and relevant federal and provincial regulatory frameworks.
- Contribute to Safety Certification strategies for multi-modal transit projects including GO Expansion, Ontario Line, and LRT/Subway extensions.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, rolling stock, and operations teams to ensure safety integration into systems engineering and design deliverables.
- Provide internal reporting on safety certification status, including evidence sufficiency, readiness gaps, and risks to achieving Operational Readiness or Authorization to Operate.
- Support the continuous improvement of safety certification frameworks, tools, and processes, promoting best practices and consistency across projects.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in system safety assurance, certification, or RAMS engineering within the transit, rail, or aerospace sectors.
- In-depth knowledge and practical application of the CENELEC EN 50126, EN 50128, and EN 50129 standards, with experience managing documentation aligned with the V-cycle.
- Strong familiarity with Canadian Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CMREA) or Transport Canada safety regulatory frameworks.
- Experience developing Safety Cases, Hazard Logs, Assurance Cases, and managing certification deliverables aligned to ISA expectations.
- Proficient in risk analysis methodologies, including FMEA, FTA, bowtie analysis, and ALARP justification.
- Knowledge of safety-related software development and validation per EN 50128 is a strong asset.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles (e.g., per ISO 15288) and their application in safety-critical environments.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, write, and audit system assurance documentation, including verification plans, configuration management plans, and interface control documents.
- Capable of managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects with technical, regulatory, and schedule constraints.
- Effective communicator, able to produce high-quality technical reports and influence decisions through structured reasoning and evidence-based arguments.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Ontario or eligibility to obtain is an asset.
- Proficiency in relevant software: DOORS, Excel, Visio, hazard log tools, and MS Office Suite.
