Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Safety Assistant to support the Infectious Disease Prevention & Management Program. The role includes assisting with respiratory protection, fit testing, and disease prevention activities across provincial sites.

Under the Manager, you will work to ensure quality health and worker safety guidance, collaborate with multiple departments, and contribute to policy development and education initiatives within the program.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related field.
  • Undergraduate degree is an asset.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Outlook & PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational and teamwork abilities with emphasis on decision making, problem solving, and communication.
  • French language skills are an asset.

  • Assist Occupational Health Nurses with fit testing services.

About the Opportunity

The Infectious Disease Prevention and Management Program is provincial and provides a service to Home Care Agencies, Nursing Homes and Residential Care Facilities that are funded by the Department of Seniors and Long Term Care. The Infectious Disease Prevention & Management Program functions as a collaborative with Infection Prevention and Control for existing and emerging infectious diseases. This is achieved by working in partnership with others including the IWK Health Center, the Department of Health and Wellness, Public Health, acute care, Continuing Care, Primary Care, Justice and a variety of community organizations and agencies. The program provides surveillance, outbreak management, pandemic response, quality and health care worker safety best practices guidance, creating OHSW-Infectious Disease specific policies, delivery of education and consultation as they relate to infectious disease prevention and management to Nova Scotia Health and other health care sectors.

Under the direction of the Manager, Infectious Disease Prevention & Management the Safety Assistant provides confidential support to the Infectious Disease Prevention & Management team.

Activities supported include:

  • Respiratory Protection (FIT testing)
  • Supporting the Occupational Health Nurses for fit testing services
  • Communicable disease prevention and management support as it relates to fit testing
About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Post-Secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field required
  • Undergraduate degree is an asset
  • Minimum of two years’ of relevant experience required
  • Excellent computer skills; familiar with enterprise software systems; proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Well-developed abilities and skills in modern office practices
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and team skills with emphasis on decision making, problem solving, motivational and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively determine day-to-day priorities and utilize foresight to ensure appropriate activities for self and recommendations for team members
  • Ability to work effectively during periods of high activity and with varying personality styles and tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills. Ability to effectively meet and communicate in situations requiring tact and poise
  • Proficiency in drafting detailed procedures, letters, reports, etc
  • Actively listens and conveys understanding of customers’ requests such that their needs can be anticipated and satisfied
  • Well-developed abilities with respect to problem solving required
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours
  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
  • Travel to other sites or throughout the province required. Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
Compensation and Benefits

Pay Scale Type: Non-Union
Band: NU02
Hourly Rate: $28.46 - $34.86
Annual Salary: $55,493 - $67,979

Successful candidates may be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, which includes health, dental, and travel insurance; long-term disability and life insurance coverage; and a defined benefit pension plan.
