Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

This position uniquely integrates safety and training management for employees under the Community Relations department. It plays a key role in implementing and overseeing safety protocols across 3 campuses and 8 buildings within Community Services (Calgary). Additionally, the role manages ministry unit training (both in-person and online) through the learning management system, providing hands-on support to ensure comprehensive training is maintained throughout the employee lifecycle.

Accountabilities

  • On-Site Safety Coordination
  • Collaborates with management and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety to identify health and safety issues and makes recommendations to address issues in a timely way.
  • Assists with timely health and safety inspections report; drafts final inspection reports, coordinates presentation of reports to the Joint Workplace Health and Safety Committee, tracks inspections and corrective actions within the scope of Health and Safety.
  • Coordinates and provides administrative support in fire and emergency procedures with hands on-training to fire wardens and offers guidance to ministry unit managers regarding fire and emergency responsibilities.
  • Ensures all first aid equipment inspections (i.e. first aid kits, burn kits, eye wash stations, AED kits) and supplies are up-to-date.
  • Orders, manages and distributes first aid supplies.
  • Assists managers with identifying required personal protective equipment, vendors, and training.
  • Assists managers and Joint Workplace Health and Safety Committee with preparing and updating hazard assessment and control measures documents.
  • Develops, and updates Workplace Violence Prevention Plans as required, in conjunction with management.
  • Assists with the preparation, distribution and maintenance of local emergency evacuation plans and diagrams for the MU.
  • Assists with emergency evacuation drills and prepares analysis of evacuation reports to the Director of Facilities, Health and Safety Committee and Community Relations Manager for review and further analysis.
  • Completes the investigation of all injuries, accidents and near misses; identifies the causes, prepares reports, and makes recommendations for corrective actions; tracks and follow-ups on actions.
  • Coordinates health and safety events such as NAOSH week.
  • Liaises with health and safety equipment vendors, inspectors, and health and safety authorities such as Alberta Health Services and Fire Department.
  • Safety Policies and Training
  • Works closely with the Director of Facilities to assists and updates safety policies and procedures as required.
  • Keeps up-to-date with the territorial safety policies; distribute accordingly.
  • Interprets the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Code and Regulation and Workers' Compensation Act and makes recommendations to achieve and maintain compliance.
  • Develops safe work procedures, safety reports, and maintains appropriate records.
  • Conducts health and safety training and orientation for employees, volunteers, and students.
  • Assists supervisors with tracking job safety training as required.
  • Active member of the CS(C) Health & Safety Committee and ensures there is an active Health and Safety Committee that complies with legislation, and that members have required, and other necessary training.
  • Documentation, Reporting and Statistical Analysis
  • Provide support to supervisors with investigates and maintains records of workplace accidents, injuries, incidents, violence, new concerns, hazards, and near misses that occur to both staff and clients/participants.
  • Assists supervisors in completing The Salvation Army e-Claims process.
  • Compiles and analyzes safety statistics for hazard identification and monitoring; recommends corrective actions.
  • Prepares and presents various safety reports to management as needed to enhance awareness of workplace safety.
  • Ensures all documentation, filing, site safety forms, incident report forms, applicable provincial legislation and regulations, safety manual, emergency preparedness plans, are updated and easily available on site.
  • Actively participates in, and supports, the Joint Workplace Occupational Safety Committee.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Community Relations Support and Training
  • Provide administrative support for in house learning management system for all new hires and employees that involves user creation, create and assign training modules for role specific employees.
  • Provide hands on in local training for the local Ministry Unit, as required.
  • Provides backup support for the administration of new hire packages, including logo wear for staff requiring special clothing, access cards, and/or name tags.
  • Collaborate closely with the team to provide perspective from a lens of safety for community/program events.
  • Be the safety representative at off-site community/program events when needed.
  • Assist team with on-site department special projects and/or events as needed.
  • Provide support with other related duties as assigned Community Relations Manager.

Working Conditions

  • This a onsite full-time permanent position at 40 hours per week. Weekly schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30AM to 5:00 PM with occasional weekends as needed.
  • The incumbent's office is located in a men’s residential services facility that is located downtown location - Center of Hope (420 9th Ave SE, Calgary, AB) as well as indoors and outdoors at all CS(C) sites.
  • Outdoor work involves walking, exposure to hazardous materials, verbal abuse, dealing with angry people.
  • Travel within Calgary may be required (less than 10 % of time).
  • Some evening and weekend work only as required.

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Post-secondary school Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Being in progress to obtain CRST (Canadian Registered Safety Technician) is an asset.
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid Certificate with level C CPR.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license and vehicle available for business use.
  • Satisfactory Police Information Check.

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of related working experience in health and safety.
  • Experience to conduct hazard and safety risk assessment.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, and other relevant legislation, health and safety standards, emergency response procedures.
  • Experience working in a social services environment is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge in Windows, MS Word, Excel, Power Point. Outlook, Teams.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $24.00 to $30.00 with a maximum of $35.99.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
