Job summary

ONxpress Civils is seeking a Safety Advisor – Construction Training to deliver engaging safety programs and apply field experience from heavy civil and rail projects. The role is office-based with a focus on training and site safety operations.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in H&S roles on heavy civil projects, OHSA knowledge, and strong facilitation skills. Aimed to enhance safety culture with comprehensive materials and trainer expertise.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in OH&S, construction management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years in a Health & Safety role within heavy civil, infrastructure, rail, or construction environments.
  • Experience conducting safety training, facilitation, coaching, or mentorship programs is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OHSA, Canada Labour Code, CSA Standards, and related legislation.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, hazard assessments, incidents investigations, and safety audits.
  • NCSO designation or progress toward it is an asset.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and safety-related software/tools.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) training programs in classroom and virtual settings.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across training initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and update training materials, lesson plans, evaluations, and assessments.
  • Identify training needs with project teams and determine delivery methods.
  • Support safety orientation programs, toolbox talks, and awareness initiatives.
  • Track training effectiveness and drive program improvements.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to reflect real-world hazards and best practices.
  • Assist with hazard assessments and mitigation of health and safety risks.
  • Support site inspections, audits, incident investigations, and root cause analyses.
  • Collaborate with project managers and safety teams to implement Health and Safety plans.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, standards, and company safety requirements.

Position Title: Safety Advisor - Construction Training

What You’ll Do:

ONxpress is seeking a Safety Advisor – Construction Training to support and strengthen our safety culture by delivering engaging safety training programs while leveraging hands-on field experience from heavy civil and rail construction environments. This position is primarily office-based and training-focused but requires a strong understanding of site safety operations, hazard management, and regulatory compliance gained through practical field experience.

  • Facilitate Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) training programs in both classroom and virtual settings.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement through all training initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and update training materials, lesson plans, practical evaluations, and written assessments.
  • Work closely with construction, operations, and project teams to identify training needs and determine appropriate delivery methods.
  • Support the development and implementation of safety orientation programs, toolbox talks, and targeted safety awareness initiatives.
  • Participate in training review sessions to capture lessons learned and identify opportunities for program enhancement.
  • Track training effectiveness through metrics and feedback, driving continuous improvement of training programs.
  • Provide subject matter expertise based on construction site safety experience to ensure training content reflects real-world hazards, risks, and best practices.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and support the identification and mitigation of health and safety risks.
  • Assist with site inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to identify trends and training opportunities.
  • Support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analysis, incorporating findings into training and awareness programs.
  • Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and safety teams to support implementation of Health and Safety plans.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, industry standards, and company safety requirements.
  • Support ongoing safety initiatives and special projects as required.
What You Bring:
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Health & Safety role within heavy civil, infrastructure, rail, or construction environments.
  • Previous experience conducting safety training, facilitation, coaching, or mentorship activities is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Canada Labour Code, CSA Standards, and related legislation.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Understanding of construction safety practices, risk management, and safety program implementation.
  • Experience working on rail or transportation infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
  • NCSO designation (completed or in progress) is considered an asset.
  • Health and Safety certifications such as Working at Heights, WHMIS, Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), Train-the-Trainer, or similar certifications are considered assets.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong computer and systems skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

Expected compensation for this role is between $80,000-$100,000 annually. Base salaries aredeterminedaccording to multiple factors including skills,experienceand potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into consideration.
