Job summary

Mainroad Alberta Contracting (Vermilion) LP, part of the Mainroad Group, seeks a Safety Advisor to lead and support the safety program for highway maintenance operations in Alberta. You will guide operations, ensure compliance with safety laws, and coordinate training and safety committees from our Camrose base.

The role requires strong safety leadership, 5+ years in the field, and an ability to travel to multiple worksites across Alberta.

Qualifications

• NCSO and/or CRSP certification required or in progress.
• Education aligns with OH&S field; CHSC asset.
• Minimum five years in highway maintenance, construction, or related safety role.
• Knowledge of Alberta safety acts and related regulations.
• Strong training delivery and written/verbal communication skills.
• Clean Class 5 driver's license and willingness to travel to Alberta worksites.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the organization's safety program in Alberta.
• Ensure compliance with OH&S regulations, audits, inspections, and contract obligations.
• Investigate incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
• Develop and maintain safety procedures, safe work practices, and risk assessments.
• Deliver safety training to employees and management; coordinate workplace safety committees.
• Support Return-to-Work and accommodation processes; participate in contract reviews and performance evaluations.

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a driven and self‑motivated professional to join Mainroad Alberta Contracting (Vermilion) LP as our Safety Advisor. In this key leadership role, you will lead and support the organization’s safety program, providing guidance to operations teams and ensuring compliance with all safety, regulatory, and contract requirements related to highway maintenance operations. This is a full‑time salaried position based in Camrose, Alberta, reporting directly to the Corporate HSQE Manager.

We are seeking a proactive, hands‑on safety professional who brings strong interpersonal skills, technical expertise, and a demonstrated ability to lead effectively.

Mainroad Alberta Contracting (Vermilion) LP was awarded two provincial highway maintenance contracts (CMA 512 and CMA 513), covering approximately 2,160 kilometres of highway and 59 bridges. Operations will be supported through yard locations in Blackfoot, Edgerton, Dewberry, Wainwright, Vermilion, Viking, Killam, and Camrose.

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:

• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP). A Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation is an asset
• COR or ISO audit training (preferred)
• Minimum five (5) years of experience in highway maintenance, construction, or a closely related industry in a professional safety role
• Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (asset)
• Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract
• Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal safety requirements
• Solid understanding of OH&S legislation and related regulations, including the Alberta Workers’ Compensation Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workers’ Compensation Board requirements, Traffic Safety Act, and other relevant legislation and contract obligations
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal partners, senior leadership, and regulatory bodies
• Demonstrated skill in managing difficult situations with tact, professionalism, and sound judgment
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience delivering training programs
• Experience coordinating and serving on workplace health and safety committees
• Experience conducting internal audits in accordance with ISO 9001 and 14001 (preferred)
• Experience developing safety procedures, safe work practices, exposure control plans, and hazard assessments
• Experience conducting workplace incident investigations
• Experience coordinating return-to-work programs and knowledge of accommodation requirements
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively in a team environment
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, and problem‑solving abilities
• Ability to influence and lead others at various levels of the organization
• Strong learning agility and attention to detail
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and the ability to learn new software programs
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly to worksites throughout Alberta
• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours as needed

Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Review, update, and create hazard assessments, including those required for new activities and projects
• Write and revise Safe Job Procedures, Safe Work Practices, and Exposure Control Plans
• Oversee compliance with OH&S regulations, including safety audits, inspections, and verification of regulatory requirements
• Lead incident investigations, identify root causes, and work with operations to implement corrective actions
• Track, analyze, and report safety performance metrics and trends
• Ensure completion of daily hazard assessments, toolbox meetings, and required inspections
• Coordinate and review subcontractor safety documentation
• Oversee site and new employee orientations, as well as new and young worker monitoring
• Deliver safety training to employees and management, including program elements, procedures, and emergency response
• Conduct emergency drills and support emergency event escalation
• Audit operations for compliance, maintain audit schedules, and complete task audits
• Document the safety program and ensure all required information is posted and available to employees
• Support and evaluate the effectiveness of workplace safety committees
• Manage and support the Return-to-Work (RTW) program and accommodation‑related processes
• Track, manage, and close out non‑conformities and corrective actions
• Liaise with regulatory agencies and Mainroad Corporate Compliance staff
• Prepare and submit statistical reporting, including incident summaries, to Mainroad Corporate Compliance
• Contribute to annual Contract Reviews, Annual Performance Reviews, and winter reviews
• Lead and support the overall safety culture by providing guidance, resources, and expertise
• Responsible for all safety‑related IMS activities
