Job description
Roboticist – Vision-Guided Robotics (VGR)

We are an innovative, Vancouver-based startup at the forefront of robotics, AI, and machine vision technologies. Backed by VC funding and we’ve been recognized with the 2025 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Leadership Award, the AAM Supplier Excellence Innovation Award, and the 2024 BC Tech “Company of the Year – Growth”, we are on a mission to redefine the future of AI-driven robotic vision systems. Apera AI helps manufacturers make their factories more flexible and productive. Robots enhanced with Apera’s software have 4D Vision – the ability to see and handle objects with human-like capability. Challenging applications such as bin picking, sorting, packaging, and assembly are now open to fast, precise, and reliable automation. Apera is led by an experienced team from high-growth companies focused on robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.

Apera AI is building the future of robotics and AI right here in Vancouver.

Let’s End Robot Blindness.

We’re looking for a Roboticist who loves building things that work — not just in simulation, but on the factory floor.
Someone who can bridge software, hardware, and motion to bring our 4D Vision™ technology to life in real manufacturing environments.

This is a hands-on, robotics-first role — not research, not theory.
You’ll design, integrate, and test robotic applications powered by Apera’s vision systems, helping intelligent robots move from lab to line.

What You’ll Actually Do:

  • Design and optimize robot programs using Apera Vue vision outputs for precise pick-and-place and motion control.
  • Work with leading industrial robot brands — ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Universal Robots — using languages such as RAPID, KAREL, and TP to create and refine robot motion driven by real-time vision data.
  • Integrate end-of-arm tooling (EOATs), mounts, and fixtures using CAD tools like SolidWorks, ensuring design intent matches real-world performance.
  • Build and test complete robotic cells in our Vancouver lab, validating accuracy, repeatability, and responsiveness through structured experiments.
  • Lead calibration and reliability validation — developing and documenting calibration procedures, motion profiles, and best practices that ensure ±0.2 mm accuracy and repeatable robot performance.
  • Support customer deployments by diagnosing and solving field issues quickly and effectively, performing structured root cause analysis, and closing feedback loops with product and vision teams.
  • Collaborate closely with vision, software, and product teams to align mechanical, electrical, and vision integration into cohesive, production-ready systems.
  • Lead structured lab tests to measure cycle time, precision, and vision-to-motion reliability — turning experimental setups into scalable production solutions.

Why This Is a Career Move (Not Just a Job)

At Apera, we don’t just build robots — we give them vision.

Here’s what makes this role special:

  • It’s not support — it’s creation. You’ll design and deploy systems that prove what intelligent automation can do.
  • You’ll own the bridge from vision algorithms to physical automation — ensuring our robots perform reliably under factory conditions.
  • You’ll grow fast. From motion planning and calibration to mechanical design and deployment, you’ll touch every part of the robotics stack.
  • You’ll see your impact. The systems you build will move from prototype to production, solving real-world problems on factory floors.
  • You’ll work across disciplines. Vision scientists, software engineers, roboticists — you’ll be the bridge that makes everything move in sync.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3–5 years of hands-on robotics, mechatronics, or automation engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in at least one industrial robot language (RAPID, KAREL, TP, etc.).
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for robotic and vision-guided systems.
  • Experience deploying or supporting automation in production environments.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • Experience integrating vision-guided robotics, including hand-eye calibration (TCP, camera-to-robot) and cycle time optimization.
  • Comfort analyzing motion profiles, calibration data, and field logs to drive system reliability improvements.
  • Familiarity with asynchronous robot processes and AI-assisted calibration tools is an asset.

Bonus Points if You Have:

  • Hands-on experience with vision-guided robotics, calibration, or pose estimation systems.
  • Experience with field deployments, bin-picking, or system commissioning.
  • Python scripting or familiarity with robot/vision APIs.
  • Understanding of TCP calibration stack-up and quantifying system accuracy.
  • A passion for solving hard mechanical–vision challenges that exist only in production environments.

Why Apera?

  • Salary starting at $100,000–$130,000 CAD, with higher compensation available based on experience.
  • Equity for every employee — you share in what we build.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Build your skills. Build your career. We don’t just promise opportunities — we back them with personalized development plans, team upskilling, and time dedicated to innovation.
  • A chance to make a difference. At Apera AI, people are our greatest strength. We’re a close-knit, agile team of motivated and creative problem solvers making real impact by tackling complex challenges in robotic vision with science, imagination, and persistence.

At Apera AI, you’ll help bring intelligent robots into production and shape the future of automation.
