As a Roadway Maintenance Leader I - Auxiliary, you will serve as a working foreman, guiding a crew through various aspects of the repair and maintenance of Auxiliary structures. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all work is performed in compliance with established methods, procedures, and safety standards. You will be instrumental in setting a positive example for new employees, providing hands-on training, and fostering a safe work environment. This role requires strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to make sound decisions in a dynamic outdoor setting.
What will you do?
- Lead crew to various job sites, assess field conditions, and direct the setup of equipment and manpower
- Initiate appropriate traffic control and safety measures as required
- Participate in equipment operations and labouring activities when necessary
- Support and assist the Roadway Maintenance Leader II with tasks such as scheduling, handling 311 notifications, SAP data entry, and maintaining the Auxiliary Structures Asset inventory
- Evaluate crew members' capabilities, assign tasks, and provide training on equipment and tools
- Ensure adherence to occupational health and safety regulations
- Maintain accurate record-keeping and documentation
- Conduct field training and performance reviews for employees
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications- Grade 12 supplemented by Supervisory Training, including Level 1
- A minimum of 3 years of experience with Auxiliary Structures, including the operation of all associated vehicles and equipment
- Experience in graffiti abatement, chain link fence, wooden fence, guardrail, deterrent posts, and concrete work
- Proficiency in computer-related work, including SAP, email, and Google Suite
Assets:
- Specific training in Skid steer, chainsaw, pipeline awareness, knuckle boom crane, and ground disturbance
Skills required for success:
- Experience in conflict resolution and building common understanding
- Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in auxiliary structures, and of relevant occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Ability to plan, schedule, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain simple records
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with experience leading crews, mentoring, and training employees
- Computer literacy, including proficiency with email, SAP, Google Suite, and databases
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class

Conditions of Employment:
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, smoke and dusty environments
- Comfortable with physical demands such as standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- May be exposed to vibrations, heights, chemicals, and mechanical/electrical hazards
- Required to wear safety footwear, head protection, skin protection, hand protection, hearing protection, eye protection, and respiratory protection
- May involve working alone and/or shift work
- Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
- This position operates primarily outdoors, requiring adaptability to various weather conditions and potential exposure to environmental factors such as noise, vibrations, smoke and dust. The work involves physical demands including heavy lifting and working at heights. You will interact regularly with your Leader II or Supervisor, traffic section, 24-hour dispatch, peers, inspectors, and occasionally with the public. Collaboration with external contacts such as utility representatives and contractors will also be part of your role.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week.
- Summer: Working 4 X 10 hour shifts per week
- Winter: Working 5 X 8 hour shifts per week
Salary Range: $37.268 (Hourly); $77,815.580 (Annually)
