Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and Fraser Health's Mission and Values, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse provides and coordinates person-centered and recovery-oriented nursing care to clients experiencing problematic substance use. Responsibilities include assessment, referrals, counselling, client and family teaching, follow-up, and health promotion activities. The role demonstrates nursing expertise and clinical leadership through direct care activities such as assessments, crisis intervention, treatment, and group facilitation.

Responsibilities
  1. Plans and provides direct nursing care, including reviewing client/family history, assessments, care planning, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
  2. Processes orders, administers medications, carries out treatments, and monitors effects.
  3. Manages emergencies like overdoses, heart attacks, assaultive behavior, and seizures, following established protocols.
  4. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members through care conferences, rounds, and meetings.
  5. Provides general and crisis counselling in various settings, teaches health maintenance and promotion, and evaluates teaching outcomes.
  6. Demonstrates and articulates RN/RPN prescriber responsibilities, identifying client needs exceeding scope of practice.
  7. Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities.
  8. Acts as a resource to clients, families, and healthcare professionals, providing clinical consultation and mentoring.
  9. Maintains accurate clinical records and documentation.
  10. Performs mental health assessments, develops treatment plans, administers medications, and monitors client response.
  11. Ensures a safe environment by adhering to safety protocols and reporting risks.
  12. Contributes to program development and clinical service delivery.
  13. Identifies and pursues personal learning goals.
  14. Develops and evaluates policies and procedures, and educates clients and the public.
  15. Provides outreach nursing care, including assessments and support in community settings.
  16. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

Graduation from an approved Nursing Program with current registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with BCCNM. Additional qualifications include completion of approved addictions or substance use training, one year of recent related experience, and possibly other certifications and licenses as specified.

  • Assessment and nursing care skills for mental health and substance use clients.
  • Knowledge of mental illness, substance use treatment, psychopharmacology, and legislation.
  • Effective communication, education, organization, collaboration, and evidence-informed decision-making skills.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and perform physical duties.
