Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), client and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Registered Nurse (RN) Community Health Services practices in accordance with relevant provincial legislation, nursing standards, the code of ethics as outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), employer policies, and individual competencies. Provides nursing care according to organizational policies, procedures, guidelines, and other practice controls.

The RN works in various clinical settings, collaborating with clients, their healthcare teams, and primary care providers. Utilizes a community-focused approach to deliver client-centered care aimed at achieving and maintaining maximum health through health promotion, maintenance, restoration, prevention, treatment, and palliation of illness and injury. Responsibilities include health assessment, planning and implementing interventions, and coordinating health services.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN.
  • Two years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC driver's license.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to provide client-focused, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care.
  • Ability to perform initial and ongoing client assessments and deliver nursing care based on evidence-based guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills (written, electronic, verbal) to facilitate inter-professional collaboration and maintain a respectful environment.
  • Ability to instruct clients and others on health-related topics.
  • Effective time and resource management skills.
  • Knowledge of care planning, care coordination, and familiarity with community programs and services.
  • Understanding of community health practices, chronic disease management, geriatric, and palliative nursing within a client- and caregiver-centered approach.
  • Self-awareness and commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Ability to make decisions supported by research and evidence-based practice.
  • Proficiency in operating related equipment and technology, including relevant computer applications.
  • Capability to perform all duties associated with the position.
