  • Shift: Monday-Friday two 8-hour and two 10-hour shifts per week; rotating hours 0700-2330. On call overnight 2-3 times per month; Weekend on call once per month. 1 holiday per year.

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit is a 21 bay unit where patients of all ages are recovered from surgery. The PACU recovers a diverse group of patients including Traumas, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, ENT, Urology and more. Patients range in complexity from low acuity to intensive care. This PACU specializes in complex airway management including extubations.

Responsibilities
  • Provides and coordinates nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
  • Completes documentation to assure an accurate record of patient's care.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments, and maintains responsibility for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other professionals in planning and implementing care within hospital policy and legal limitations.
  • Assesses needs of patients and families, provides appropriate teaching to facilitate discharge planning, and makes the necessary referrals to community agencies to provide continuity of care.
  • Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care, patient and employee safety, and customer service.

Qualifications
  • Current active or compact license as Registered Nurse for the state of Iowa (BSN preferred)
  • Current RN License recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing preferred
  • Minimum of 6 months of RN experience

***PLEASE NOTE: All newly licensed RNs with less than six months of RN experience and who are interested in this department or any other Acute RN roles within UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, are encouraged and required to participate in the RN Residency program. Newly licensed nurses must apply for the Registered Nurse Residency position.
