What qualifications are we looking for?

At YMCA Calgary, we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

  1. Completed a degree/diploma. It will be considered an asset if your education is in Education, Environment, Recreation Therapy, Recreation Management, Physical Education/Kinesiology.
  2. Previous day camp or overnight camp and/or outdoor education experience.
  3. Previous experience working with persons with disabilities and a solid understanding of the integration process.
  4. Supervisory experience.
  5. Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificate within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John's Ambulance, and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  6. Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
  7. Three professional references.
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Hire, train and provide performance management for day camp counsellors and outdoor school facilitators.
  2. Manage the program and site operations Health and Safety obligations as defined by law and YMCA policies.
  3. Manage the camp budget and purchase equipment and supply inventories.
  4. Contribute to YMCA outdoors and day camp programming within all of YMCA Calgary.
  5. Assist with Camper registration, managing wait lists, and space bookings.
  6. Provide quality leadership, implementation, guidance, and resources in the areas of camp counsellor training, camper care, and evaluation of all staff.
  7. Ensure that YMCA Camp Counsellors and Facilitators are providing safe and engaging programs while following YMCA policies and procedures.
  8. Assist with daily camp duties, camper supervision, be in ratio, and perform site maintenance.
  9. Role model behavior when dealing with staff, campers, teachers, and families in any YMCA venue.
  10. Lead communication with counsellors, parents, teachers, campers, membership services staff, and other YMCA day camp staff.
  11. Complete all required administrative tasks.
  12. Lead fund development activities specific to Camp Riveredge priorities.
  13. Actively develop your staff team utilizing a strength-based approach and by engaging in regular conversation about their performance.
  14. Maintain strong connections with our key partners in your community – such as local schools, community associations.
