Summary of Duties:
Risk Management Duties
- Responds daily to organization-wide risk requests to provide expert consultation and advice on patient care, policy, and administrative matters with internal constituents including senior leaders, managers, physicians, clinical staff, and support departments.
- Reviews, audits, and edits Safety Event Reports, ensuring accuracy and follow-up, monitoring for trends, and bringing issues to stakeholders.
- Provides risk consultation to develop and revise policies, procedures, and Emergency Response Codes in collaboration with Emergency Preparedness leads.
- Provides onsite leadership during emergency codes and infrastructure disruptions to ensure effective response and recovery.
- Executes responses to external risk sources such as Coroner’s requests, jury recommendations, and regulatory complaints.
- Participates in or leads key risk and patient safety committees, representing risk management interests.
Quality Of Care Reviews
- Leads risk response to serious safety events and patient incidents, supporting investigations, liaising with families, and implementing recommendations.
- Prepares reports and presentations for system review committees.
- Shares improvement recommendations with leadership for feedback and approval.
- Supports clinical teams in disclosure and communication with patients and families.
Claims Management
- Leads identification and management of liability, property, malpractice, and injury claims.
- Investigates claims with legal and insurance partners; represents hospital at legal proceedings; guides staff through legal processes.
Integrated Risk Management (IRM)
- Supports IRM program through engagement with leaders on enterprise risks and mitigation strategies.
- Uses HIROC IRM Risk Register to document risk assessments, actions, and progress.
Risk Mitigation
- Ensures completion of Risk Assessment Checklists by stakeholders annually.
- Assesses and mitigates risks related to service shutdowns and facility projects, ensuring business continuity.
- Identifies and mitigates risks to improve safety for patients, staff, and the public.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to adopt best practices and meet legal/regulatory requirements.
Qualifications/Skills
- Health care or health sciences undergraduate degree required; clinical background and 5+ years acute care experience preferred; Master’s degree an asset.
- At least 4 years’ experience in healthcare risk management, claims, or leadership roles.
- Training or certification in Patient Safety or Quality Improvement preferred.
- Healthcare Risk Management Diploma or Certification is an asset.
- Experience with incident reporting systems, electronic patient records, and HIROC Risk Register is advantageous.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Incident Analysis Framework.
- Proven leadership, collaboration, critical thinking, attention to detail, and communication skills.
- Experience in education, teaching, or presentations at various organizational levels.
