Opportunity

Investment Risk Management (IRM) is a department within the Risk Management division. IRM supports AIMCo’s investment decision-making processes by providing insight and independent oversight of AIMCo’s investment risks at the total fund, client total portfolio, asset class, product and strategy levels. IRM is organized into the following teams to provide dedicated coverage of investment risks: Total Fund, Client Total Portfolio, Tactical, Public Equity, Public Fixed Income & Mortgages, Private Debt & Loan, Infrastructure & Renewable Resources, Real Estate and Private Equity.

Opportunity

Investment Risk Management (IRM) is a department within the Risk Management division. IRM supports AIMCo’s investment decision-making processes by providing insight and independent oversight of AIMCo’s investment risks at the total fund, client total portfolio, asset class, product and strategy levels. IRM is organized into the following teams to provide dedicated coverage of investment risks: Total Fund, Client Total Portfolio, Tactical, Public Equity, Public Fixed Income & Mortgages, Private Debt & Loan, Infrastructure & Renewable Resources, Real Estate and Private Equity.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Investment Risk Management, this position within the IRM team is responsible for overseeing the Private Equity asset class. This position will also have exposure to other private market asset classes.

The key to success in this role is to establish and cultivate successful partnerships with AIMCo’s investment management teams, including senior leadership and executive, with an ability and effective means of negotiating and influencing the direction of key decisions and investments when required.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining relationships and ongoing dialogue with portfolio managers and the Executive Managing Director, Global Head of Private Equity
  • Maintaining portfolio risk monitoring and reporting that provides transparency into the Private Equity asset class’ risk profile and supports AIMCo in making risk-informed decisions
  • Performing risk assessments of new or revised strategies, products, and material transactions. This includes highlighting the total portfolio risk implications of Private Equity asset class initiatives and positioning
  • Contributing to the oversight of other private market asset classes, as requested
  • Collaborating with other risk managers on transversal risks and cross asset class relative value
  • Researching and recommending modeling improvements, in consultation with portfolio managers and the broader Risk Management team, to improve the risk measurement of exposures within the portfolio
  • Advising on potential stress events or other emerging risks. Collaborating with portfolio managers and the broader Risk Management team to perform stress & scenario testing
  • Providing coaching, mentorship, and leadership to other private market risk managers as well as the larger IRM department
  • Contributing actively to AIMCo’s investment decision-making by presenting Risk Management’s advice and opinions to the Management and/or Board Investment Committee on proposed product mandates, strategies, and investment approvals
  • Contributing to the development of organizational risk culture awareness and personal responsibility

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline (Finance, Economics, Financial Mathematics, Computer Science). Masters, Ph.D. or the completion of a relevant professional designation (e.g. CFA, PRM, FRM etc..) is a plus.
  • 12 + years of experience relevant work experience as a Private Equity investment risk manager or portfolio manager. Exposure to multiple private market asset classes is a plus.
  • Extensive experience and expert knowledge of a broad range of investment strategies and risk types
  • Initiative and the ability to grasp new concepts, driven and results oriented
  • Thorough with attention to detail and an ability to prioritize and organize
  • Able to influence senior management and peers, comfortable speaking up and providing counterbalance, while simultaneously maintaining collaborative
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to AIMCo’s core values of excellence, transparency, humility, integrity, and collaboration, and inspires the same in others



Success Measures

Year one success will be achieved by developing strong partnerships with the Global Head of Private Equity and within Risk Management.
