Company Description

HMCS Sackville, Canada’s oldest warship, is a National Historic Site and a Naval Memorial that served as a combat veteran in the Second World War. As the last of Canada’s 123 corvettes, she played a key role in the Battle of the Atlantic and holds a unique place in Canadian naval history. Restored to her wartime configuration, Sackville hosts exhibits dedicated to those who served during the Battle of the Atlantic. The Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, a charitable non-profit organization, preserves HMCS Sackville perpetually for the benefit of all Canadians.

Role Description

The Canadian Naval Memorial Trust is looking for a dedicated and versatile individual to join our team as a Retail Operations and Administrative Assistant. This position is equally split between overseeing our gift shop, adjacent to our historic ship, and handling various administrative duties in our office. The successful candidate will manage the daily operations of the gift shop and provide comprehensive administrative support. We seek a proactive, organized, and customer-focused individual who can efficiently manage diverse tasks in a dynamic setting.

Qualifications

Gift Shop Operations and Customer Service

· Customer Engagement: Greet customers as they enter the store, offering assistance in finding items or recommending products. Ensure customers feel welcome and valued throughout their visit.

· Sales Assistance: Help customers select items based on their needs and preferences, providing information about products, including features, prices, and promotions.

· Cash Handling and Transactions: Operate the cash register efficiently, process customer payments (cash, card, etc.), and issue receipts. Ensure that all sales are accurately recorded in the system.

· Daily Reconciliation: Perform daily cash count and reconcile receipts to ensure accuracy. Investigate any discrepancies and report to management.

· Inventory Management: Track stock levels and monitor product movement to prevent overstocking or stockouts. Regularly update inventory records and reorder products as needed.

· Merchandise Restocking and Display: Ensure the store is always well-stocked by replenishing shelves as necessary. Create visually appealing product displays to attract customers and highlight promotions or new arrivals.

· Store Cleanliness and Organization: Keep the store neat and tidy, maintaining a clean environment for customers and staff. Ensure product labels, pricing, and signage are clear and up

to date.

· Customer Problem Resolution: Address customer concerns or complaints promptly and professionally, offering solutions or alternatives to ensure customer satisfaction.

· Promotions and Sales Goals: Assist in implementing sales promotions and encourage customers to take advantage of special offers. Track sales goals and contribute to achieving targets set by management.

· Team Collaboration: Work closely with other team members to ensure smooth store operations, such as coordinating shift schedules, assisting in training new staff, and contributing to team meetings.

Office Administration and Support

· Perform general administrative tasks such as answering phones, responding to emails, and managing correspondence.

· Maintain and organize office files, records, and documents.

· Assist with scheduling meetings, preparing meeting materials, taking minutes, and supporting the preparation of reports and presentations.

· Utilize OneDrive and SharePoint to maintain organized documentation of Gift Shop Materials.

· Perform Visa Consolidations for the Trust.

Comprehensive Knowledge and Coordination

· Provide information about the ship and the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust to visitors, enhancing their overall experience.

· Assist with event planning and coordination for Trust-related activities and functions, demonstrating a willingness to learn and share knowledge about Canadian naval history.

Public Engagement:

· Actively engage with visitors, answering questions, and fostering an interactive and educational experience.

· Participate in shipboard routines, historical events, and ceremonies to enhance the public's understanding of naval history.

Skill Development:

· Attend lectures, participate in a reading/study program, and engage in hands-on practical activities to continually enhance knowledge.

· Practice and refine Retail Sale techniques through training sessions and on-the-job experience.

Supervisory:

· Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor based on organizational needs and priorities.

Work Environment

Full-time, with a maximum commitment of 35 hours per week. 2 months program. Seasonal Employment.

SALARY: $17 per hour

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Proven experience in retail, customer service, or office administration.

· Proficiency in using office software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email platforms.

· Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.

· Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Basic cash handling skills and familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems.

NOTE: Any relevant combination of qualifications and experience at an appropriate level to competently perform required duties will be considered.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

· Previous experience in a similar role within a museum, historical site, or non-profit organization.

· Knowledge of Canadian naval history or a willingness to learn.

· Familiarity with inventory management software.

· Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

· Friendly and approachable demeanour with a passion for providing outstanding customer service.

· Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment and handle diverse tasks efficiently

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

· This position involves working with the public and may require working on weekends, holidays, and evenings. This job may also involve physical activities such as climbing ladders and navigating through narrow spaces on the ship. We are an equal opportunity employer.
