Job description

Purpose:

The Restoration Technician is responsible for carrying out our ecological restoration scopes on site. Restoration Teams use plant material and soil bioengineering techniques to repair erosion, strengthen, revegetate, and create habitat along riverbanks. Restoration crews will also carry out Solar Irrigation, vegetation maintenance and native plant nursery activities as necessary.

Status: Reports to Restoration Crew Foreman

Location: Rockyview County, interprovincial deployment required.

Pay Level: Level 1

Duties and Responsibilities:

INSTALLATION

  • Collect and store live plant material
  • Handle and install erosion/sediment control materials
  • Install soil bioengineering elements
  • Planting native vegetation (trees, plugs and shrubs) to spec
  • Nursery planting and maintenance activities
  • Install/repair perimeter fencing
  • Solar Irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair
  • Pre-season preparation of irrigation systems and materials. Post-season takedown and processing of systems
  • Prepare sites for planting
  • Carry out maintenance and monitoring scopes as necessary
  • Carry out other project requirements as per Crew Foreman/Project Manager

OTHER DUTIES

  • Transport crews and materials to site as needed
  • Farm upkeep and maintenance
  • Ensure that provided vehicle is operated in a safe and respectful manner
  • Correspond with Resource Manager when regular maintenance, cleaning and repairs are required on the provided equipment
  • Clean, organize and maintain tool condition. Report lost or damaged equipment and PPE to Foreman
  • Tool rentals, returns
  • Keep up to date on relevant training and industry standards
  • Attend departmental meetings as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience landscaping, tree planting or forestry
  • Experience in industrial field work an asset (minesite, oil and gas)
  • High-quality plug planting skills
  • Experience using hand saws and pruning shears
  • Backcountry driving experience
  • Experience working outdoors in challenging weather
  • Experience working in small team-oriented crews
  • A passion for the outdoors and environmental stewardship
  • Has an interest and curiosity for horticulture and restoration
  • Physical abilities must include: heavy lifting, resilience to cold and wet conditions, athletic level fitness, can travel by foot for long distances over uneven terrain
  • Strong knowledge of irrigation system design
  • Willingness to work and travel alone
