The Communications Manager, reporting to the Director of Corporate Affairs and Patient Engagement, will be responsible for developing and leading strategic internal and external communications to enhance AbbVie's profile and presence in Canada. The role involves leading a team responsible for therapeutic sector development, brand communication strategy, and executing tactics aligned with our business objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand effective communication and engagement practices and advise on improving strategy cohesion, ensuring internal and external stakeholders are informed of and committed to AbbVie's priorities and values.
- Collaborate with the Canadian leadership team and cross-functional members, providing counsel to anticipate stakeholder behaviors and better manage external and internal outcomes.
- Protect and enhance AbbVie's reputation internally and externally using various communication channels and tools, proactively managing crises and issues.
- Possess expertise in digital channels and social media strategy aligned with AbbVie's global approach.
- Promote and refine AbbVie's corporate social responsibility and philanthropy strategies in Canada, consistent with the global approach.
- Deep knowledge of corporate communications, including large-scale internal meetings and multichannel corporate communications.
- Strong leadership skills to develop, mentor, and manage team members, as well as external vendors and agencies, ensuring compliance with procurement requirements.
BRAND AND CORPORATE IMAGE
- Develop AbbVie's messaging in Canada in collaboration with other teams like Medical Affairs, Government Affairs, and Global Commercialization, including related materials and tools.
- Lead external communication strategies for AbbVie Canada across appropriate channels such as the website, forums, social media platforms, and others.
- Partner with the Corporate Affairs team to train and equip employees to communicate and utilize AbbVie's messaging effectively.
- Create a content calendar to keep strategic messages current across all platforms, including social media and website.
- Work with the Director of Corporate Affairs to develop media strategies for the CEO and other leadership team members to ensure consistent, brand-aligned messaging.
- Measure, monitor, and verify internal processes as needed.
- Support onboarding and integration of new team members, in addition to managing personnel.
THERAPEUTIC SECTOR AND PRODUCT PIPELINE SUPPORT
- Participate in brand teams and lead communication strategies related to therapeutic sectors or future product pipelines, overseeing their implementation.
- Collaborate with colleagues across functions to identify opportunities for synergy and ensure alignment of external and internal activities.
- Proactively identify collaboration opportunities with internal teams like Medical Affairs, Market Access, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Relations, and External Stakeholders.
- Ensure external activities are aligned with internal communications within each therapeutic sector.
- Coordinate with global and regional teams to align external and internal communication requirements.
- Supervise the development of key messages and external communication documents related to therapeutic sectors, including media interactions and other external points of contact.

REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Social Sciences, or equivalent.
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Political or Social Sciences, or Communications is an asset.
- Five to eight+ years of experience in corporate communications within a multinational or PR agency, including external/internal communications and crisis communication experience.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including patient groups, government agencies, and sector associations.
- Advanced proficiency in English and French, both oral and written.
- Practical knowledge of MS Office and other relevant technologies.
- Strong understanding of social media platforms, current trends, and tools, preferably in the pharmaceutical or related sectors.
- Experience in developing and implementing high-level strategies and operations.
- Knowledge of the Canadian media landscape, current social media trends, and pharmaceutical communications practices.
- Willingness to travel approximately 10% within Canada and 5% internationally.
