Job description

Wesway is a local, non-profit organization which provides personalized respite services for families who are caring for a family member with a disability or chronic health condition. Wesway offers a dynamic team-oriented work environment, and we are currently seeking applicants for the following position:

RESPITE WORKER
With experience caring for Seniors
Starting Wage Range: $20.81 – $22.36 plus $4.50 premium per hour
(Plus 17.5% in lieu of benefits, and paid personal time after 1yr of service)

Position Description:

Wesway is seeking Respite Workers to provide support to adult and senior participants at the Wait at Home (WAH) Respite Home Service. The Respite Worker is responsible to:

  • Carry out all duties usually performed by the primary caregiver in relation to the day-to-day support of the participant. Participants are adults and seniors who have a wide range of physical, developmental and/or cognitive challenges (e.g. complex medical needs, Alzheimer Disease, or a related dementia). These individuals have a variety of unique support needs including, but not limited to, tube feeding, personal care, catheterization, lift and transfer support, medication, diabetic care, etc.
  • Plan and carry out both home and community-based recreational and leisure activities which are geared to the unique strengths, needs, and preferences of all participants.
  • Perform all duties required to support the day-to-day operation of the Respite Home Service (e.g. meal planning and preparation, laundry, house cleaning, shopping, management of petty cash, documentation).

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience supporting adult and seniors with a wide variety of special needs.
  • Previous experience supporting multiple participants within a team environment is an asset.
  • Previous experience supporting individuals with responsive behaviours.
  • Proven skills in developing and planning recreational activities specific to the needs of individuals.
  • Comfortable supporting individuals with personal care
  • Able to do lifts and transfers.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to problem solve and work in a complex, fast paced environment.
  • Complex medical treatments or procedures may be routinely performed.

Hours of Work and Availability Preference:

There are three part contracts available until March 31, 2026.

The Respite Home is a 24/7 operation, and you must be available for 8-hour shifts (days, evenings, and midnights). All shifts are awake shifts.

Rotation is subject to change based on the Respite Home Vacancy
Management Process and based on the needs of the employer. Staff meetings have been incorporated into the rotations and are scheduled shifts.
