The Salvation Army London Village in London, Ontario is seeking a temporary part-time Respite Support Staff to care for children, youth and adults with an intellectual disability across Centre-Based Respite, Residential Care, Summer and Day Programs.

You will support participants physically and emotionally, help plan activities, assist with meals, and coordinate with families and community supports, while upholding agency policies and OH&S standards.

Qualifications

  • Two years of Community College in Developmental Disabilities or related field.
  • Minimum one year of direct care in social services with individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure program participants' physical, emotional, medical, and behavioral needs are met.
  • Plan and facilitate recreation, leisure activities, and skill-building opportunities.
  • Advocate for participants’ health and well-being and liaise with families and community supports.
  • Assist with transportation, meals, and medication as required.

Services include Centre-Based Respite, Residential Care, Summer Programs and Day Programs.**Accountabilities:****Client Services:*** Responsible to ensure the needs of program participants are met i.e. physically, emotionally, medically, and behaviorally.* Contribute to the planning and facilitation of recreation & leisure activities, volunteer opportunities and skill building opportunities appropriate to age, skill level, interests and goals.* Advocate on behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.* Provide personal care to participants as required.* Provide intervention for any behavioural challenges.* Liaise with parents, caregivers, volunteers, and community supports/partners as required.* Responsible for the transportation of participants in program vehicles.* Prepare and distribute meals, snacks/nourishments as outlined on the approved menu.* Complete house maintenance duties as well as the general organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.* Responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies, as required.* Required to complete safety checks, logbook recordings, as required.* Perform other position related duties as required.**MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY**:* This position reports directly to the Respite Program Supervisor or designate.* Uphold all Salvation Army policies, directives, and operating guidelines as contained in the Policy Manual of The Salvation Army London Village.* Work within the legal standards of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017 and Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008).* Participate in participant specific and/or program specific training as required.* Participate in ongoing professional development and training.* Mandatory attendance at scheduled staff meetings.**Working Conditions:*** This is a temporary part-time position based on an average of **57 hours** biweekly.* Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program requirements.* The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.* Some travel is associated with this position.* Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.* Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.* Walking and standing for long periods.* Some kneeling, running may be required.**Normal hours of work:**Thursday and Friday day shifts, 8:30am - 4:30pm**and**Weekend 1: Saturday from 7:00am - 3:00pm and Sunday from 7:00am - 4:00pm Weekend 2: Saturday from 3:00pm - 11:00pmAbove shifts include a 1⁄2 hour paid meal break**Education, Qualifications and Certifications:*** Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.* Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.**Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:*** Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience in a social services setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities; dealing with crises.* Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.* Current First Aid & CPR Certification.* Current Safe Food Handling Certification.**Skills and Capabilities:*** Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.* Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.* Must be able to lift 50lbs unassisted.* Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.* Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.* Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.* Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.* Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.* Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.* Self-motivated/disciplined.* Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.* Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.* Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.* Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.* Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint; Email and Internet etc.* Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.* Valid Ontario Class “G” or “G2” Driver’s License is required, current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is also required.* Provide an original copy of a Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening including a Broad Record Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.* May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.* Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.**Normal location of work:** 1340 Dundas Street, London ON N5W 3B6**Compensation:**The target hiring range for this position is $23.10 to $28.88 with a maximum of $34.65.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.The Salvation Army will provide reasonable accommodation upon request.
