Job summary

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) invites applications for a full-time childcare provider in our Child Respite Home in Delta, BC. You will deliver nurturing care to children from infants to teens, ensuring a safe, warm environment onsite and in-home as needed.

Under supervision, you will address developmental needs, teach life skills, and collaborate with caregivers and staff. Qualifications include Infant/Toddler or ECE credentials and 2 years’ relevant experience with children with special needs.

Qualifications

• Requires valid Infant/Toddler Certificate or ECE Certificate with a minimum of ECE Assistant.
• Two years’ related experience with children and youth with special needs in a residential setting or crisis intervention.
• Demonstrates competency in both verbal and written English.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct services to children to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
• Respond to children’s needs and cues, both verbal and non-verbal.
• Observe signs of illness, abuse, or distress and report to supervisor.
• Teach and orient new staff on program policies and methods.
• Assist children with life skills and routine activities.
• Plan and assess developmentally appropriate activities for wellbeing.
• Provide transportation to school and daycare as required.
• Support connection with TFN cultural practices and traditions.
• Work as part of the Family Services team and attend staff meetings.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
• Perform household duties in residential home as needed.

Under the direct supervision of the Respite House coordinator, the respite home staff will: provide quality, nurturing care for all children (infant-teenage), communicate effectively with children, youth, caregivers and staff as needed. The respite worker will possess demonstrated skills to properly address developmental needs of infants and toddlers; while ensuring a safe, warm environment for people accessing services onsite and in home as needed.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Takes direction from the Respite Housing Co-Ordinator in providing direct services to the children to maintain a safe and healthy environment of the program.


• Respond quickly to children’s different and personal needs, both verbal and non-verbal cues.


• Observe the children to detect signs of illness, abuse, neglect, emotional disturbance, or other extenuation circumstances and report these signs immediately to the Respite Housing Coordinator.


• Provides basic orientation of policy/procedure/work methods and job shadowing for new employees in the program if requested.


• Assists and teaches children / youth to relate in a socially appropriate manner using daily routines and activities, life skills related to home, community, work or school. Examples are communication, chores, shopping, leisure activities, transportation, technology, grooming and hygiene.


• Plan, carry out, and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that promote the well-being of each child and their diverse needs.


• Provides transportation to school and day care as required, for both children and their caregivers.


• Assist people in learning more about and/or connecting with TFN cultural practices, and traditions.


• Function as a team member of the Family Services department. Attend and positively participate in staff meetings as required.


• You contribute to an environment and seek what is best for individuals so they can flourish and grow in their environment.


• Positively address all concerns, incidents or crises which affect program mandate, TFN policy, personal issues and community relations.


• Respect and assure people of confidentiality in the community and other service professionals.


• Consult with and report to immediate supervisor and prepare and submit reports as required.


• Perform other duties that the Family Services Manager deems necessary to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operation of the program.


• Perform basic household chores such as cooking, laundry, shopping for food and supplies, yard work, and upkeep of company vehicle while in the residential support home.

Qualifications

• Requires valid Infant/Toddler Certificate, and or, Early Childhood Education Certificate with a minimum of Early Childhood Education Assistant.


• Must have Two (2) years’ related experience working with children and youth with special needs such as autism and/or other mental health in a residential setting, crisis intervention OR equivalent combination of education in the related field and experience in working with children and youth with behavioral and other needs may be considered.


• Ability to manage working in a respite home with up to 4 children, including overnights.


• Valid class 5 driver’s license is preferred.


• Valid First Aid/CPR.


• Food Safe.


• Demonstrates competency in both verbal and written English.


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.


• Professional conduct and strict maintenance of confidentiality.

Working Conditions

The Respite Home Worker is required to work a variety of 12 hr shifts, 9 am to 9 pm or 9 pm to 9 am, with the possibility of other shifts to cover absences which may include days, evenings & weekends. There will be flexibility required for the position and the hours and days of work may change, including overnight shifts, to meet operational and health and wellness needs of the respite home.

Wages

Pay scale for this position is $28.61 to $32.18 per hour with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience & internal equity.
