Job summary

Kahnawà:ke Education Center in Quebec is seeking a Resource Teacher to provide preventative and remedial programs and services to students, support teachers and aides, and develop individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with special needs.

You will assess student achievement, participate in transition planning, administer tests, create IEPs, and collaborate with school staff to deliver targeted interventions and ongoing support.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Education or equivalent with specialization in special education.
• Minimum of 5 years of special education experience.
• Knowledge of administering and interpreting achievement tests.
• Complete proficiency in English language.

Responsibilities

• Assess student achievement to determine appropriate IEPs and teaching strategies.
• Create and monitor IEPs, and provide remedial services individually or in groups.

The mission of the Kahnawà:ke Education Center is to providethe children who live in Kahnawà:ke with a solid and well-rounded educationlaying the foundation for their future careers. The mission of KEC is carriedout by the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) as well as theadministrative arm of KEC. The KEC is responsible for the operation and supportof three schools in the Kahnawà:ke community and post-secondary administration.

Position Summary

The role of the Resource Teacher is to provide preventativeand remedial program and services to students and supports the teachers andteacher’s assistants. The Resource Teacher assess individual studentachievement in order to determine the most appropriate teaching strategies andto develop individualized education plans (IEP) for special needs students.

KeyResponsibilities

Responsibility 1:Student Achievement Assessment (25%)

• To assessall new students (formally and informally).
• To takean active part in transition meetings at the end of the school year to ensure asmooth transition of student files.
• Toadminister standardized achievement tests, analyze results and determine keyelements of the IEPs.
• To enterscores and details of IEPs into the database.
• To createreports for teachers concerning special needs students and advise on anappropriate course of action (no service, informal strategies or create formalIEPs).
• To determine the priorities in collaboration with the associate principal and torespond to urgent cases in a timely manner.

Responsibility 2: Remedial Services – Intervention (50%)

• To createacademic, behavioral and developmental IEPs.
• Toprovide high-quality remedial services to students, either individually or in agroup on regular basis as per their IEP’s.
• Tore-teach and reinforce concepts as appropriate, ideally within the classroom toensure students are not falling behind further.
• To workin collaboration with other student services professionals to deliver bestprogram/support for the students.
• Tomonitor the IEPs, ensure plans are in place and all concerned are fulfillingtheir responsibilities (teachers, TA’s, other specialists, parents, etc.).
• Toeffectively communicate with students, parents, student services, staff membersand teachers at all stages (prevention, intervention, implementation and,follow-up).
• To ensureconfidential files are in order and all supporting documents are kept in files.

Responsibility 3: Prevention and Teacher’s Support (25%)

• To putmeasures in place that monitor students achievement and wellbeing in order toprevent students needing special services support.
• Toresearch best practices, up to date methodologies, keep up with best practicesand to provide all this information to teachers and TA’s (academic as well asbehavioral).
• Based onthe assessments, to advise teachers of principal areas of focus for each newgroup/class.
• Toprovide teachers with relevant materials, resources and strategies to bestsupport special need students.
• To assistin curriculum adaptations and modifications (for both - gifted and at-riskstudents).
• Toprovide regular ongoing support to teachers through weekly meetings.
• To act asa liaison between the classroom team and the student services team.
• To attendparent/teacher nights and provide effective feedback.
