Job Description

This is a Casual On-Call position.


Position Purpose Summary

The Shelter Residential Worker B provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.


Accountabilities

Client/Program Support

  1. Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications.
  2. Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations).
  3. Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking urine samples, doing bed checks, room/personal searches.
  4. May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures.
  5. Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies enforces behaviour-based restrictions outlined by caseworkers or supervisory staff.
  6. May serve as Receptionist for Shelter - Answers phones, takes messages, responds to community inquiries and directs incoming requests.
  7. May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports.
Working Conditions

  1. The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or transitional housing and/or supportive housing.
  2. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
  3. Isolation
  4. Monotony
  5. Odors
  6. Dealing with angry people
  7. Verbal abuse
  8. Work schedule affecting lifestyle
  9. Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste
  10. Exposure to drugs and alcohol
  11. The incumbent may have little to no travel required.
  12. The incumbent carries a pager/walkie talkie and will work shifts.
  13. The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illness due to:
  14. Physical attacks by others
  15. Exposure to infectious diseases
  16. Exposure to bodily fluids
  17. Sharp objects
  18. Other dangerous situations.
Qualifications And Education Requirements

Qualifications and Certifications:
  1. The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.
  2. The successful applicant will hold/have a diploma in Social Services.
  3. CPR, First Aid Certification.
  4. Criminal Record Check.
  5. Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  1. The incumbent must have more than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting.

CASUAL AVAILABILITY

  1. Employees are expected to provide availability for all three shift times (7 AM-3:30PM, 3:30PM-11:30PM, and 11:15PM-7:15AM) as per collective agreement.
  2. Casuals must indicate availability for 16 shifts: four must be Saturday or Sunday and two additional must be graveyard (where applicable).
  3. Casuals shall also provide availability for eight statutory holidays annually, including Christmas or New Years.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  1. Background check consent.
  2. A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  3. A clean drivers abstract.
  4. Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
The salary range is based on Collective Agreement, not any other factors.
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $23.64 to $24.02 with a maximum of $24.39. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
