Job Description
The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated healthcare provider primarily responsible for closely observing patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. They are passionate about person-centered care, engage in restorative practices, and assist with activities of daily living for the patients/residents they observe.
They work under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional, such as the Unit's Patient Care Manager or their designate. The patients may be elderly with dementia or young individuals who have experienced traumatic injuries, including those involved in motor vehicle collisions, assaults, falls, or who have attempted self-harm or have physical disfigurements.
Summary of Duties
- Observe assigned patients to support a safe and caring environment.
- Ensure resident safety, especially during violent outbursts.
- Provide one-to-one compassionate supervision for residents with conditions like Dementia, Alzheimer's, Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, or Stroke.
- Supervise residents at risk of elopement, suicide, or with uncontrolled behaviors, both long and short term.
- Engage residents in meaningful activities such as reading, storytelling, or looking through photo albums.
- Stay within close proximity to residents during supervision, including during program changes or group activities.
- Complete documentation as required, such as Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behavior Assessment Record (BAR) charts.
- Immediately notify a registered healthcare professional if a patient is in danger, goes missing, or if there are significant behavioral or condition changes.
- Interact with and comfort patients, engaging in cognitively stimulating recreational activities as appropriate.
- Maintain a professional image by wearing a clearly legible name tag.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living under supervision.
- Communicate observations to the healthcare team to aid in care planning.
- Complete required documentation as per policy and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as cleaning or filling masks.
Qualifications / Skills
- Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent education recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
- At least one year of recent experience in patient care or related settings, or a PSW certificate from an accredited program, or completion of one year of an accredited Nursing program.
- Fluent in English for speaking and documentation.
- Recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
- Experience in patient-focused care and ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Proof of immunizations for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, and hepatitis B.
- Proof of a negative 2-step TB test within the past year or a negative chest X-ray within the past five years.
- Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check as a condition of employment.
