The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated healthcare provider primarily responsible for close observation of patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. Passionate about person-centered care, the observer engages in restorative care and provides assistance with activities of daily living to the patient/resident they are observing.
Working under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional, such as the Unit’s Patient Care Manager or their designate, the Resident Care Assistant supports a diverse patient population. This may include elderly patients with dementia or young patients who have experienced traumatic injuries, such as motor vehicle collisions, assaults, falls, or self-harm attempts, including those with physical disfigurements.
Summary of Duties
- Observe assigned patients to support a safe and caring environment.
- Ensure resident safety, particularly during violent outbursts.
- Provide one-to-one compassionate supervision for residents with conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, frontal brain injury, schizophrenia, or stroke.
- Supervise residents at risk of elopement or suicide, ensuring protection for residents with uncontrolled behaviors both long and short term.
- Engage residents in meaningful one-on-one activities, such as reading, looking through photo albums, or storytelling.
- Maintain close proximity to residents during supervision, following them to new programs or group activities.
- Complete required documentation, including the Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behavior Assessment Record (BAR) charting hourly.
- Notify a registered healthcare professional immediately if the patient is in danger, has gone missing, or if there is a significant change in behavior or condition.
- Interact with and comfort patients as needed, engaging in cognitively stimulating recreational activities.
- Maintain a professional image, including wearing a clearly legible name tag.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living under close supervision of registered health professionals.
- Communicate observations to the healthcare team to aid in care planning.
- Complete documentation as per corporate policy and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as high-touch cleaning or filling masks.
Qualifications/Skills
- Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent education recognized by the Ministry of Education, Ontario.
- At least one year of recent experience in patient care settings or a PSW certificate from an accredited program, or completion of at least one year of an accredited nursing program.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Successful completion of a recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
- Experience in delivering patient-centered care.
- Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Proof of immunization for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, and hepatitis B.
- Proof of recent negative TB skin test or chest x-ray.
- Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check as a condition of employment.
