Job description

The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated healthcare provider primarily responsible for close observation of patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. Passionate about person-centered care, the observer engages in restorative care and provides assistance with activities of daily living to the patient/resident they are observing.

Working under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional, such as the Unit’s Patient Care Manager or their designate, the Resident Care Assistant supports a diverse patient population. This may include elderly patients with dementia or young patients who have experienced traumatic injuries, such as motor vehicle collisions, assaults, falls, or self-harm attempts, including those with physical disfigurements.

Summary of Duties
  1. Observe assigned patients to support a safe and caring environment.
  2. Ensure resident safety, particularly during violent outbursts.
  3. Provide one-to-one compassionate supervision for residents with conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, frontal brain injury, schizophrenia, or stroke.
  4. Supervise residents at risk of elopement or suicide, ensuring protection for residents with uncontrolled behaviors both long and short term.
  5. Engage residents in meaningful one-on-one activities, such as reading, looking through photo albums, or storytelling.
  6. Maintain close proximity to residents during supervision, following them to new programs or group activities.
  7. Complete required documentation, including the Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behavior Assessment Record (BAR) charting hourly.
  8. Notify a registered healthcare professional immediately if the patient is in danger, has gone missing, or if there is a significant change in behavior or condition.
  9. Interact with and comfort patients as needed, engaging in cognitively stimulating recreational activities.
  10. Maintain a professional image, including wearing a clearly legible name tag.
  11. Assist patients with activities of daily living under close supervision of registered health professionals.
  12. Communicate observations to the healthcare team to aid in care planning.
  13. Complete documentation as per corporate policy and procedures.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned, such as high-touch cleaning or filling masks.
Qualifications/Skills
  1. Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent education recognized by the Ministry of Education, Ontario.
  2. At least one year of recent experience in patient care settings or a PSW certificate from an accredited program, or completion of at least one year of an accredited nursing program.
  3. Fluency in spoken and written English.
  4. Successful completion of a recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
  5. Experience in delivering patient-centered care.
  6. Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  7. Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  8. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  9. Proof of immunization for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, and hepatitis B.
  10. Proof of recent negative TB skin test or chest x-ray.
  11. Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check as a condition of employment.
