Job description

The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated healthcare provider primarily responsible for closely observing patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. Passionate about person-centered care, the observer engages in restorative care and provides assistance with activities of daily living for the patients/residents they observe.

Working under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional, such as the Unit’s Patient Care Manager or designate, the Resident Care Assistant may care for a diverse patient population, including elderly individuals with dementia or young patients who have experienced traumatic injuries. This includes individuals involved in motor vehicle collisions, assaults, falls, or those who have attempted self-harm or have experienced physical disfigurement.

Summary of Duties
  1. Observe assigned patients to support a safe and caring environment.
  2. Ensure safety during incidents of violent outbursts.
  3. Provide 1:1 compassionate supervision for residents with conditions such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Frontal Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, Stroke, etc.
  4. Supervise residents at risk of elopement or suicide, ensuring protection for residents with uncontrolled behaviors.
  5. Engage residents in meaningful 1:1 activities, such as reading, photo albums, or storytelling.
  6. Remain within close proximity during supervision, including during program transitions and group activities.
  7. Complete documentation as required, such as Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behaviour Assessment Record (BAR) charts.
  8. Immediately notify a registered health professional if a patient is in danger, goes missing, or exhibits significant behavioral or condition changes.
  9. Interact with and comfort patients, engaging in cognitively stimulating recreational activities as appropriate.
  10. Maintain a professional appearance and wear a clearly legible name tag.
  11. Assist patients with activities of daily living under supervision.
  12. Communicate observations to the healthcare team for care planning.
  13. Complete all documentation as per corporate policies.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned, such as high-touch cleaning or filling masks.
Qualifications and Skills
  1. Minimum Grade 11 education or equivalent as recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  2. At least one year of recent experience in patient care, hospital, long-term care, or complex continuing care settings, or a PSW certificate from an accredited program, or completion of at least one year of an accredited nursing program.
  3. Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
  4. Recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
  5. Experience in patient-focused care and ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  6. Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  7. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  8. Proof of immunizations for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, and hepatitis B.
  9. Proof of a negative 2-step TB skin test within the past year or a negative chest x-ray within the past 5 years.
  10. Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check as a condition of employment.
