Job description

Community Living Services Full Time Kamloops, BC $27.53 - $31.57 CAD per hour

  • Valid BC Class 4 Unrestricted Driver's License
  • BC Class 5 DL is accepted with the condition of ability to obtain a Valid Class 4 Learners permit within the probationary period. (Reimbursement available for the costs)
  • A safe driving record
  • Access to a reliable vehicle
  • TB Testing showing free from tuberculosis
  • Physical abilities to provide individuals with personal care and recreational activities indoors and outdoors. Including supporting individuals in wheelchairs, and walkers, carrying, lifting, transferring, pushing, pulling, bending, assisting clients safely in and out of bed, and bath, and using lifts, and other health equipment appropriately.
  • The following training is required and provided to the successful candidate free of charge. Existing certification is an asset: Emergency First Aid with CPR, Mandt-RCT, Safe Food Handling, Medication Management, CLBC Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Harassment.
  • A background check through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is required.
  • This job requires union membership with a 1.85% union dues deducted from pay.
  • Requires Community and School Support Worker, Resident Care Aid, or Home Support Worker Certificate
  • One (1) year of recent related experience working with seniors with developmental diverse abilities
  • Or a combination of education, training, and experience.

ABOUT THE JOB:

The Residence Worker assists adults with diverse abilities in a supported home environment. They promote quality of life for all residents by encouraging independence, maximizing their well-being, and enhancing social participation. This position requires a high level of personal and palliative care. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborates with individuals, caregivers, and other community professionals to assess residents’ needs and develop and attain individual goals. Adjusts goals and strategies as required.
  • Assesses personal care and health needs and performs care as required.
  • Provides activities that support residents’ independence and encourage meaningful community connections.
  • Provides healthy meals and snacks, ensuring the specific dietary needs of the individuals are met.
  • Manages general household chores including, meal plan and prep, shopping, laundry, yard maintenance, and repairs.
  • Administer medication following the agency procedures.
  • Supports residents in advocating for themselves and liaises with social workers, community resources, family, etc.
  • Teaches relationship-building skills while fostering self-esteem, self-advocacy, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Supports residents in managing their personal finances as needed.
  • Schedule appointments and transports clients using the program accessibility van. (medical, optical, and dental appointments, family visits, recreational outings, etc.)
  • Recognize and responds to potential risks and emergency situations to minimize harm to clients, staff, and/or the public. Takes proactive measures to prevent potential escalations.
  • Manages the residential budget including clear and accurate documentation of petty cash and spending.
  • Maintains daily client information and activity logs.
  • Ensures required documentation is complete, timely, and accurate.

  • Build healthy, trusting relationships with all involved parties, including the individual, colleagues, supervisors, community professionals, care teams, and family members
  • Respond appropriately to challenging behaviours, crisis situations, and aggression
  • Provide life skills support using a strengths-based approach
  • Develop and implement client-focused schedules, plans, and goal-setting methods
  • Work effectively independently and as a strong contributing member of a team
  • Follow directions and implement strong critical and analytical thinking in the work applying appropriate policies and procedures
  • Take initiative, notice what needs to be done in the program, and follow through
  • Provide clear and accurate written documentation
  • Run and maintain a home, including shopping, cleaning, yard work, cooking, budgeting, and meal planning.
  • Cook healthy, nutritional meals

PROGRAM: Desmond House

STATUS: Full-Time

COMPENSATION: $27.53-$31.57 per hour (Grid 10 as per collective agreement)

HOURS of WORK: 37.4 hours per week on average

SCHEDULE: 4 days on 2 days off rotation - 2 days between 3pm-11pm, followed by 2 days between 4pm-12am
