Please note: This position requires you to work on campus but is a “live-out” role.

About the Role:

The Residence Life Coordinator as part of a team is responsible for the supervision of the Residence Life program. This program ensures the safety, wellness and development of students living in residences. This position reports to the Manager, Residence Life.

As the Residence Life Coordinator, you will:

  • Supervise and provide direction to an RLS team of 20-30 student staff members, including Head Residents to meet Residence Life program goals;

  • Act as a first responder for all issues that arise during business hours and act as an escalated/third responder for non-business hours (i.e. noise/smoking complaints, distress calls, flood, fire, etc.);

  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, providing front-line crisis management and initiating broader departmental response when necessary;

  • As part of a team coordinate the recruitment and selection process for student Residence Life Staff (RLS), Living Learning Community (LLC) Peer Mentors, and other student staff and student leaders;

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs, resources and in-service training and team building in collaboration with the Residence Life Management Team;

  • Ensure student staff are accurately, consistently and appropriately administering University, department and residence life policies;

  • Investigate allegations of improper student conduct, including interviewing those involved liaising with other residence staff and reviewing documentation related to resident behavior;

  • Determine sanctions for incidents up to and including suspension from Residence and utilize educational sanctions where appropriate as per the Residence Community Standards;

  • Communicate with students regarding behaviour concerns and the consequences of inappropriate behaviour and advise them of University rules and regulations

  • Participate as a respondent in the Residence’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and ensure understanding, compliance, and support of students and student staff;

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of student behaviour, concerns and interactions/conflicts for future reference in our documentation system ( eRez );

  • Oversee RLS and RAC finances (could amount to $25,000-30,000 per Residence Life Coordinator) and assess the appropriateness of spending and financial recordkeeping.

What you need to Succeed…

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Humanities, Social Science, etc.);

  • Standard First Aid & CPR C;

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a residence environment in post-secondary;

  • 1-2 years of experience in a leadership/manager/supervisor role;

  • Extensive knowledge of residence life operations in a post-secondary student environment;

  • Supports, models and promotes respect, equity, diversity and inclusion within the workplace and community;

  • Maintains knowledge of current best practices, trends and issues related to student development and transition to university, risk management and student-at-risk;

  • Knowledge of FIPPA, AODA, Health and Safety and Human Rights legislation;

  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability to develop collaborative working relationships;

  • Strong facilitation, training, presentation, organization and multi-tasking skills;

  • Exceptional conflict management skills, ability to diffuse, de-escalate and respond effectively in highly emotional and/or sensitive situations such as mental health concerns, suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, gendered violence, etc., including crisis situations;

  • Strong problem-solving and project management skills.

Preferred or Asset Skills…

  • Training certifications in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Mental Health First Aid – Youth or equivalent.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade K , Salary Scale ( $61,286- $99,384 )

  • Target Hiri ng Range: $ 61,286- $63,000*
