  • Duties

    As part of CanmetMATERIALS’ Corrosion Technical Team in Hamilton, ON, the Research Technologist works closely with research scientists, engineers and technologists to set-up and conduct a wide range of laboratory experiments to simulate or explore the behaviour of materials in a variety of service environments (for example, salt solutions, acids, oils, and high temperature and / or high pressure gases). Current research areas include materials for clean energy production (hydrogen, bioenergy and nuclear power), critical mineral processing and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

    The Research Technologist will perform a variety of tasks, including preparing test specimens, maintaining and calibrating scientific equipment, and assembling and operating equipment and apparatus that ranges in complexity from water baths to gas analyzers to autoclaves operating at high temperature and pressure. The Research Technologist is responsible for collecting, processing and ensuring the quality of the scientific data produced in their experimental work, all while observing the highest standards of occupational health and safety.

    The Research Technologist position requires the incumbent to work onsite at the Hamilton laboratory full-time.

    Intent of the process

    The intent of this process is to staff one 2-year determinate position located in Hamilton, Ontario.

    A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

    Information you must provide

    In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

    Education :

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree with a specialization related to materials science or engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, corrosion or a relevant technical science, from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Experience :

  • Experience assembling, operating and troubleshooting experimental apparatus and equipment for use in scientific projects or industrial applications.
  • Experience selecting, modifying or developing test methods for scientific experiments or analytical tests.
  • Experience collecting, compiling, verifying and analyzing data from experiments.
  • Experience calibrating or validating scientific equipment and techniques.
  • Experience maintaining technical logs, files or records.
  • If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

    Asset Qualifications :

  • Experience with high temperature or high pressure equipment.
  • Experience with corrosion testing or electrochemistry.
  • Experience with mechanical testing of materials such as : tensile testing, fracture testing, fatigue testing and creep testing.
  • Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience working with dangerous chemicals such as : sulfides, concentrated acids, organic solvents, flammable and toxic gases.
  • The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

    Knowledge :

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of conducting experiments in a chemistry, corrosion or materials science laboratory.
  • Knowledge of the apparatus, equipment and techniques used in materials science, materials engineering or corrosion testing.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Abilities / Competencies :

  • Ability to set-up and conduct tests involving toxic, corrosive, high temperature and / or high pressure environments, which includes working with compressed gases, acids, bases and other chemicals.
  • Ability to identify problematic results and troubleshoot methods and apparatus in order to address them
  • Ability to prepare metallic, polymeric or coated specimens for environmental or mechanical testing.
  • Ability to organize work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Operational Requirements :

  • Willing and able to work on site in a laboratory environment 5-days a week.
  • Willing and able to work overtime as required and to adopt flexible work hours as per operational requirements.
  • Willing and able to wear a supplied-air breathing apparatus (SABA or SCBA), which requires maintaining a clean-shaven condition in the areas of the face where the seal is made.
  • Willing and able to wear an air-purifying respirator (half-mask), which requires maintaining a clean-shaven condition in the areas of the face where the seal is made.
  • Conditions of employment

    Reliability Status security clearance

    Willing and able to work with hazardous chemicals and gases in accordance with appropriate safety protocols.
