Job description

The Research Technician III (“RT III”) will demonstrate an ability to participate in study procedures that involve keen attention to detail and a higher technical skill than the roles performed by the Research Technician Level II. The RT III will require much less supervision by the Study Director/Coordinator or Facility Management and will be able to be assigned responsibility for a study duty, and perform all related documentation, setup and execution without assistance from a higher level. The RT III will demonstrate a clear understanding of the objectives of the study and will understand the study ramifications of variations to the protocol design.

This position will demonstrate a higher level of understanding of animal health.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leading assigned in vivo study procedures in the Companion Animal Department.
  2. Recording and documenting experimental details with a high level of integrity, ethics and accuracy.
  3. Assisting in the preparation of data summary reports, study related data entry, Quality Control.
  4. Performing study-related husbandry duties to ensure proper animal care practices are adhered to and are according to CCAC guidelines and facility SOPs.
  5. Working within/leading a team to ensure that projects are successfully conducted and completed to a high level of quality and scientific competence.
  6. Participating in the maintenance of an adequate inventory of supplies.
  7. Assisting the Facility Operations Managers in the maintenance and operation of animal facility and husbandry in accordance with CCAC guidelines and Animals for Research Act.
  8. Involvement with internal working groups (e.g., animal care committee, health and safety, etc.).
  9. Explaining techniques to new employees and visitors.
  10. Training staff on various procedures as appropriate.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Duties Associated with the Companion Animal Department (CAD)

General Techniques

  1. Operate centrifuges and perform advanced blood separation.
  2. Restrain animals for procedures as needed.
  3. Basic Procedures:
  • Drug administrations (oral, SC).
  • Dog blood collection (venipuncture, catheter).
  • Fecal collection.
  • Urine Collection (free flow).
  • Body weights.
  • Health observations.
  • Heart rate acquisition.
  • Study feed preparation.
  • Advanced Procedures:
    • Drug administrations (IM, IV, oral gavage).
    • Venous catheter placement (saphenous, cephalic, jugular).
    • QMR.
    • Sedation.
    • Cat Blood Collection (jugular, cephalic, and saphenous).
    • Blood pressure (automatic and doppler) acquisition.
    • Anaesthetic monitoring and recovery.
    • Advanced veterinary treatments.
    • Advanced drug preparation (i.e., formulations).
    • Body condition scoring.
    • Euthanasia (including brain and eye harvesting).
    • Urine collection via catheter/cystocentesis.
    • Anaesthesia.
    • Dentistry.
    • DOG CSF collection.
    • Cognitive Testing.
    • Dog cognitive testing (DNMP, discrimination, pre-training, egocentric, spatial discrimination, landmark, etc.).
    • Basic Behavioral/Activity etc. testing:
      • Prepare rooms for testing.
      • Testing (O-maze, T-maze, treadmill).
      • Video Scoring (pruritic scoring, behavioural scoring).
      • Actical.
      • QOL questionnaire video recording.
    • Advanced Behavioural/Activity Testing:
      • QOL questionnaire scoring.
      • Ethovision.
      • Anxiety scoring.
      • Testing (open field, curiosity, thunderstorm, human interaction).
      • Clicker training.
      • Walkway forcemat data acquisition and analysis.
      • T/O-maze forcemat data acquisition and analysis.
    • Data Management:
      • Data entry.
      • Data QC.
      • Any other duties as deemed necessary.
