About The Position

This is a temporary support staff bargaining unit position. This position will start as soon as possible and run for 2 years - working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $31.05, reporting to the Manager, BPRC.

Reporting to the BPRC TAC Manager and working closely with Research Scientist and Research Centre Coordinators, the candidate is responsible for carrying out activities for various research projects focused on fermentation, analytical testing and experimentation in collaboration with researchers, research students, industry partners and Applied Research and Innovation Office staff.

The incumbent's technical responsibilities include design, operation, implementation, commissioning, clean up, calibration, operation, and troubleshooting of analytical equipment (specifically fermentation equipment), and measurement devices for the assigned research projects.

The incumbent will also be responsible for developing purchasing documents, recording the project progress and equipment status and helping with research outreach in collaboration with Researcher and Applied Research and Innovation Office.

Specific Accountabilities

Technical Duties

  • Support and assist with research activities including literature review, data analysis, and

experimentation in collaboration with researchers and industry partners in the area of water,

bio-process and materials.

  • Be directly involved with experiments and maintain accurate reports.
  • Support with laboratory analysis and design of experiments for research projects:
  • design,
  • implementation,
  • installation,
  • calibration
  • documentation.
  • Provide consultancy support to partners, industry representatives for development of new

projects

  • Help to prepare technical reports and presentation for research partners
  • Work with researchers to design and develop work plans and coordinate time lines for project

completion

  • Attend meetings with research teams and industry partners to update activities
  • Help the supervisor with coordination of research student’s activities
  • Help with selection, installation and implementation of various laboratory equipment and

installation.

  • Maintaining equipment and instrumentation in lab in terms of regular maintenance repairs:
  • Scheduling regular maintenance
  • Keeping usage logs for equipment
  • Keeping up with overall lab maintenance consumables:
  • Ordering auxiliary equipment
  • Gas and liquid ordering
  • General lab materials, gloves, glasses etc.
  • Ensure that the projects comply with health and safety regulations, College policies, WHMIS,

and chemical storage and handling

  • Ensure that quality standards are maintained

Administration Duties

  • Work with the supervisor and Applied Research and Innovation Office to prepare purchase

orders

  • Liaising with research partners, suppliers, contractors, and relevant authorities for purchasing

as well as executing required tasks

  • Work with supervisor and Applied Research and Innovation Office for project management

within cost and time constrained environments.

  • Work with Supervisor to develop task list for research students
  • Support the Research Lead in collaboration with Applied Research Outreach Coordinator to

prepare content for promotional literature such as website content, brochures or flyers and

coordinates printing and distribution

  • Help with tours to future partners, major contributors and guests.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 year diploma in Fermentation, Biochemistry, Biology or a related / relevant field of study
  • Minimum 1 year experience; with Fermentation Lab and Pilot Equipment, Laboratory analytical instruments & Laboratory experiments and procedures
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft office
  • Strong commitment to overall health and safety
  • Well-developed analytical, problem-solving and evaluation skills required to troubleshoot, problem-solve and provide analytical solutions to a wide variety of situations
