Job description

Description

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Scientist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator. Work hours are mainly 8:30-4:30 but will require occasional evening and weekend hours (~5-6X/year) for lab tours for funding agencies and patient organizations.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership

  • Provide high-level technical support towards the lab's research objectives
  • Support the lab by providing knowledge, skills, and training to research staff, fellows and trainees on the operation and research applications of specialized rehabilitation equipment
  • Support the lab and assist the principal investigator through mentorship and supervision of trainees and research staff
  • Provide expert advice to principal investigators in experimental planning and data interpretation
  • Work in concert with other labs across Canada who are part of the CanStroke Recovery Trials network

Project Management

  • Support the design and implementation of studies using robotic technology, brain stimulation and advanced neuroimaging techniques
  • Manage daily operations of the lab including lab staff, lab space and databases
  • Assist with hiring of lab staff
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards
  • Ensure management and maintenance of equipment in collaboration with the Principal Investigator

Strategic Management

  • Assist with the acquisition and management of new equipment for the lab
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator to help shape the lab's scientific priorities by identifying novel avenues of inquiry
  • Recommend and oversee changes and improvement to methods, procedures and practices within the lab
  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and developing of safety codes, standards and systems within the lab

Scientific Contribution

  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of targeted rehabilitation interventions including the integration of brain stimulation and robotics
  • Leading or contributing to grant development, manuscript preparation and publication
  • Establishing and implementing protocols to ensure rigorous, repeatable and clinically meaningful research
  • Lead lines of scientific inquiry aligned with the lab's core focus areas
  • Support the Principal Investigator in the training, mentorship and management of students and staff

Decision Making

  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the lab's core focus areas
  • Develop and implement standard operating policies and procedures for the lab
  • Work closely with financial and research administrative staff to assist with financial operations of the lab

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Related University degree required, PhD in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or similar required
  • Experience with robotic assessment for neurologic dysfunction in stroke and brain injury
  • Experience with non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation)
  • Experience with coding in MATLAB
  • Experience with neuroimaging data analysis
  • Minimum of 5 years related technical experience in the field
  • Ability to operate robotic devices and non-invasive brain stimulation devices, generate standard operating procedures
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques in neurorehabilitation, robotics, brain stimulation and neuroimaging
  • Demonstrated the ability to communicate academic research aims and results to a wide variety of audiences
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to work both independently and as a member of a dynamic team with multiple projects
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to mentor and coach others
