CANADIAN INSTITUTE FOR CYBERSECURITY

The Cyber Attribution Data Centre (CADC), an established initiative at the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at the University of New Brunswick, is designed to be a national leader in cyber threat attribution. The centre's core mission is to identify malicious activity by gathering data from diverse sources and employing advanced cyber attribution intelligence analytics. In addition, the CADC is dedicated to training and equipping the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) cybersecurity specialists. This multidisciplinary unit leverages expertise from social sciences, business, computer science, engineering, law, and science, fostering innovation and collaboration to address the evolving challenges of cybersecurity.

Salary Range: $76,262 - $104,433 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

  • Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Cyber Attribution Research Scientist designs research strategies, develops analytical models, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance our understanding of threat actor behavior.
  • Design and lead large-scale research projects, evaluations, and innovation initiatives.
  • Provide strategic direction for high-impact research on cyber threat attribution methodologies and technologies.
  • Identify emerging trends and develop analytical frameworks to improve attribution accuracy.
  • Conceptualize and implement experimental designs to test novel attribution techniques.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies into research frameworks.
  • Analyze large, complex cybersecurity datasets to uncover patterns, indicators, and threat actor behaviours.
  • Design, build, and validate statistical and machine learning models to support real-time attribution.
  • Use big data technologies and cloud platforms to develop scalable models.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and continuously optimize models for accuracy.
  • Mentor and guide data analysts and software developers on threat actor research.
  • Collaborate with threat intelligence analysts, incident responders, engineers, and researchers to translate findings into actionable solutions.
  • Contribute to the CADC's research roadmap and define strategic research directions.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with academia, industry, and government to support collaborative research.
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary meetings to ensure integrated knowledge sharing and feedback.
  • Publish findings in academic journals and industry publications, present at conferences and internal briefings.
  • Engage with external partners and the cybersecurity community to share insights and promote collaboration.
  • Develop white papers, case studies, and technical briefs to communicate research advancements.
  • Represent the CADC at national and international cybersecurity forums to promote its mission and work.
  • Stay current on cybersecurity, AI, and data science advancements.
  • Recommend tools and technologies to enhance research capabilities.
  • Monitor global cyber threat trends and emerging research to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Mentor junior researchers and support their professional growth.

What You Bring

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in a research-intensive environment.

Additional Strengths

  • Demonstrated track record of conducting independent research in cybersecurity or related fields.
  • A portfolio of publications, presentations, or real-world implementations related to cyber threat attribution.
  • Direct experience in cyber threat intelligence analysis and attribution.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies and cloud computing platforms.
  • Hands-on experience deploying machine learning models in production environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of advanced persistent threat (APT) groups, digital forensics techniques, and cyber threat methodologies.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with deep experience in data analysis and model development.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or R for data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
  • Sound understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, including network security, malware analysis, and threat intelligence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear technical and non-technical interactions.
  • Collaborative mindset with a proven ability to thrive in interdisciplinary team environments.
