About The Position

This is a temporary support staff bargaining unit position. This position will start as soon as possible and run for 1 year - working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $42.56.

Reporting to the BPRC Manager and working closely with Faculty, Researchers and Research Centre Coordinators, the incumbent is responsible for carrying out activities for various research projects focused on chemical and anaerobic sewer treatment technologies and experimentation in collaboration with research lead, research students, industry partners and Applied Research and innovation Office staff.

The incumbent will have two sets of activities: a) Technical Duties and b) Administration Duties.

The incumbent’s duties will be leading collaborative research projects, designing experiments, maintaining sophisticated research equipment and contract research testing. Proposal applications and related reporting are a key responsibility in this position.

This position will be based in London Ontario and will work on project out of the Pottersburg Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 1141 Hamilton Road.

Specific Accountabilities

Technical Duties

  • Develop and lead research projects from proposal development to project completion; based on chemical and anaerobic sewer treatment
  • Executing pilot scale scientific experiments- Supervises and operates DCS/PLC (operating system) control for all unit operations for each research project.
  • Mentor students on applied research activities and assign work and oversee the students;
  • Conduct research activities including literature review, data analysis, and experimentation in collaboration with researchers and industry partners in the area of water, wastewater, bio- process and materials;
  • Lead laboratory analysis and design of experiments for research projects:
  • design,
  • implementation,
  • installation,
  • calibration
  • documentation;
  • Provide consultancy support to partners, industry representatives for development of new projects
  • Help to prepare technical reports, editing/modifying existing SOP’s and presentation for research partners
  • Work with researchers to design and develop work plans and coordinate time lines for project completion
  • Attend meetings with research teams and industry partners to update activities
  • Help the supervisor with coordination of research student’s activities
  • Help with selection, installation and implementation of various laboratory equipment and installation.
  • Maintaining equipment and instrumentation in lab in terms of regular maintenance repairs:
  • Scheduling regular maintenance
  • Keeping usage logs for equipment
  • Keeping up with overall lab maintenance consumables:
  • Ordering auxiliary equipment
  • Gas and liquid ordering
  • General lab materials, gloves, glasses etc.
  • Ensure that the projects comply with health and safety regulations, College policies, WHMIS, and chemical storage and handling
  • Ensure that quality standards are maintained
  • Oversee hazardous materials research projects; advises research technicians and students on the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain records such as hazardous and non-hazardous waste manifests and associated documents.
  • Respond to hazardous materials spills; implements clean-up plan.

Administration Duties

  • Work with research office on development of research projects and funding agency applications.
  • Work with the supervisor and Applied Research and Innovation Office to prepare purchase orders
  • Liaising with research partners, suppliers, contractors, and relevant authorities for purchasing as well as executing required tasks
  • Work with supervisor and Applied Research and Innovation Office for project management within cost and time constrained environments.
  • Work with Supervisor to develop task list for research students
  • Support the Research Lead in collaboration with Applied Research Outreach Coordinator to prepare content for promotional literature such as website content, brochures or flyers and coordinates printing and distribution
  • Help with tours to future partners, major contributors and guests.

Other Duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 year degree in Wastewater Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in Wastewater Engineering, with a strong focus on anaerobic sewer processes and chemical sewer treatment
  • Background in biokinetics, mass transfer, and sewer engineering
  • Experience with Proposal and Grant Applications
  • Comfort wearing PPE (steel toe boots, APR, FR uniform, safety glasses/goggles, Tyvek suit) for extended periods of time
  • Experience conducting and leading academic/industry research projects
  • Experience executing pilot scale scientific experiments
  • Experience with laboratory analytical instruments
  • Hazardous Materials handling experience
  • Familiar with laboratory experiments and procedures
