Perennia Food and Agriculture Corporation is Nova Scotia’s development agency focusing on the food sector. Our mission is to support success, transformation, and economic development in Nova Scotia’s agriculture, seafood, and food and beverage sectors.

This employment opportunity is with the Centre for Marine Applied Research, a division of Perennia, who leads and supports applied research projects that advance the management, long-term sustainability, growth, and resilience of Nova Scotia’s marine coastal resources. We collect and analyze biophysical and socio-economic data that provide the foundation for science-based decision making and foster innovation necessary to advance the long-term sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture industries.

Research Project Manager (12-month term position)

The Centre for Marine Applied Research (CMAR) is looking for a new member to join our highly skilled and collaborative team. This position will work very closely with internal stakeholders, partners (i.e., academic and government), and funding agencies. It is a 12-month term position with the option for extension. This is a hybrid position, working from home and CMAR’s office at the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE), in Dartmouth, NS.

The Research Project Manager will be responsible for managing cross-disciplinary research projects and programs focused on the sustainable management and development of Nova Scotia’s coastal resources. Areas may encompass coastal marine environments, climate change, coastal ecology, and sustainable development of aquaculture and fisheries. You will lead and co-support research and development activities, as required.

Principal Responsibilities:

The Research Project Manager’s key tasks and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing multiple concurrent interdisciplinary research and development projects, including budgets, schedules, and securing resources.
  • Communicate with and manage internal stakeholders and project partners.
  • Assist in writing and research support for proposal development.
  • Responsible for providing regular project updates, tracking and projecting budgets, and submitting claims to funders.
  • Support writing peer-reviewed articles and public-facing technical reports, with opportunity for authorship.
  • Critical review of scientific reports and articles.
  • Lead and attend meetings and workshops to present project results and guide project work.
  • Intermittent travel may be required.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as aquaculture, marine biology, oceanography, marine management or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Has a strong understanding of Nova Scotia’s fisheries and aquaculture practices.
  • Past experiences demonstrate you have a strong familiarity with project management and best practices.
  • Experience in scientific writing (proposals, white papers, and peer-reviewed articles).
  • Strategic thinker with strong collaboration skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to engage with multiple stakeholders, including academia, government, industry, and associations.
  • You have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.

Assets that will strengthen your application:

  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and RStudio.
  • Holds a valid Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) and a Small Domestic Vessel – Basic Safety (SDV-BS) certificates.
