Job description

Research Engineer in Healthcare

Barco Labs

At Barco, we design cutting-edge technology to enhance everyday life. We look beyond the image, creating integrated sight, sound, and sharing solutions that help people collaborate, share knowledge, and captivate audiences. In Barco Labs, our team of experts explores emerging technologies and builds pioneering proof-of-concepts across our Healthcare, Enterprise, and Entertainment divisions, or ventures into new markets.

Our mission is to stay at the forefront of technological innovation. By developing demonstrators and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, we challenge ourselves to uncover new use cases and push the boundaries of what is possible.

Innovation in healthcare

Healthcare is one of the key markets of Barco. For many years, we have contributed to advancements in radiology, mammography, surgery, dermatology, dentistry, pathology, and more.

The Barco Labs Healthcare Innovation team (consider our team to be an internal startup inside a large company) is dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare. This multidisciplinary team—comprising technical experts and researchers, commercial strategists, and clinical experts—is constantly looking to develop solutions that improve patient care and healthcare models.

By adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, we focus on the real needs of healthcare professionals and patients. In close collaboration with hospitals, healthcare providers, patients, and regulatory bodies, we guide innovations throughout the entire development cycle. From ideation and MVP definition to market evaluation, business case creation, R&D, and clinical validation, our team ensures each solution meets the highest standards. We manage every step, from creating proof-of-concepts and market validation to commercial introduction and early-stage sales, ensuring our innovations have a lasting impact on healthcare.

Purpose of the job

As a Research Engineer, you will participate in various research projects, exploring state-of-the-art technologies and contributing to demonstrators and proof-of-concepts. Working with a team of researchers, developers, product managers, and clinical experts, you will contribute to shaping the future of healthcare.

As a Research Engineer, you

  • Are outcome-oriented, seeking to deeply understand end-user, partner, and patient problems to develop innovative solutions.
  • Implement first-of-a-kind prototypes and proof-of-concepts iteratively, in close collaboration with internal and external clinical partners.
  • Enjoy working with and exploring new technologies.
  • Stay updated with academic, standardization, regulatory, and commercial developments in computer science, healthcare imaging, and visualization applications.
  • Share insights and interact with peers internally and externally (e.g., conferences).
  • Are a team player, collaborating with colleagues and partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.

We are looking for a colleague who

  • Holds a master's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Has a strong background in software engineering with modern languages like Python, C/C++, TypeScript, etc.
  • Has basic experience with cloud platforms such as AWS.
  • Has hands-on experience with Linux, Docker, embedded systems, etc.
  • Familiar with software engineering tools and best practices like git, CI/CD, Atlassian stack.
  • Has an interest in AI and machine learning, including data collection, exploration, training, and MLOps.
  • Has experience with image processing and hardware acceleration (GPUs, CUDA, Vulkan, OpenGL).
  • Is aware of current technology trends like LLMs, Generative AI, and Agent AI, and can identify valuable applications beyond buzzwords.
  • Possesses a creative, tinkering mindset to build test setups and PoCs using equipment like Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Unreal Engine, or Ollama.

Additional pluses include:

  • Knowledge of medical imaging, DICOM, and related standards.
  • Experience in medical device development (MDD/MDR, regulatory pathways, Software as a Medical Device, EU AI Act).
  • Experience collaborating with healthcare organizations, managing data collection and clinical studies.
  • Interest in broader eco-system collaboration and funded research contributions.
  • Thoroughness, independence, perseverance, and documentation skills in a healthcare context.
  • Proactivity, initiative, and end-to-end problem ownership.
  • Good communication skills in English; Dutch is a plus.

What’s in it for you?

  • Drive innovation with technologies that contribute to new healthcare products and services.
  • Be part of an innovative group with startup mentality inside a larger company.
  • Work for a global top employer in technology.
  • Enjoy our attractive headquarters.
  • Benefit from continuous training via Barco University.
  • Receive a competitive salary package.
