The Opportunity

Researchers within IWK Health Mental Health and Addictions (MHA), in collaboration with IM/IT Business Intelligence, are recruiting a Data Engineer. This role involves designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure, providing hands-on experience with data-driven projects and tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines in production environments.
  • Support maintenance and optimization of data infrastructure for accurate data extraction, transformation, and loading.
  • Develop ETL processes for data extraction and manipulation from multiple sources.
  • Automate workflows like data ingestion, aggregation, and ETL processing.
  • Prepare raw data in the Enterprise Data Warehouse for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Partner with analysts and leaders to support deployment of machine learning models.
  • Build, maintain, and deploy data assets on cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure).
  • Ensure data accuracy, privacy, security, and compliance through quality control.
  • Monitor data system performance and implement optimizations.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, 7.5-hour shifts. Position based in Halifax (remote or hybrid).

Your Qualifications

Applicants should meet these requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or certification in health, informatics, computer science, engineering, business/commerce, or sciences.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, good communication, flexibility, problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, adapt to complex environments, and work in loosely structured settings.
  • Experience with SSIS, SQL, Python, R, or similar tools.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Azure DevOps, SharePoint, and willingness to learn new technologies.

Assets

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Management, or Business/Commerce.
  • Experience in healthcare settings.
  • Project management skills; PMP certification is an asset.
  • Experience with clinical data and data categorization.
  • Microsoft Azure Data Engineer or Fabric certifications.
  • Experience integrating on-premises databases with Power BI for reporting.
