The Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The CanCO2Re Initiative is seeking a Research Coordinator for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) who can support delivery of our transdisciplinary research program, represent the project to external stakeholders and identify opportunities to grow the initiative, and develop their own scholarship in the area of CDR. Reporting to the Principal Investigator this role will be expected to collaborate with internal experts across a range of disciplines and make connections with external experts in industry and government.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Track the progress of ongoing research activities and collaborate with project investigators as needed to ensure research is being delivered in a timely fashion within the funding timelines.
  • Identify opportunities for and encourage collaboration between existing research activities.
  • Synthesize emerging research findings and undertake independent research that supports delivery of the overall project goal, resulting in either academic or white paper publications.
  • Identify research gaps that can be filled through new activities using existing funding or that could be funded with new proposals.
  • Coordinate development of research proposals within the timelines and structures of both the University of Calgary and the funding agency.
  • Present research findings and represent the project at relevant conferences, workshops, and meetings to a range of audiences; including the general public, technical experts, and policy makers.
  • Build and enhance connections with the existing project advisory board.
  • Develop a network of connections in industry, government, and academia that can be leveraged to support delivery of project outputs and develop new research projects.
  • Provide strategic vision on how to sustain and grow the research portfolio, multidisciplinary team, and its capabilities.
  • Support recruiting, training, and development of students and post-doctoral associates.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in a field relating to CDR, such as engineering, climate science, political science, economics, law or public policy.
  • A research-based graduate degree and work experience in a research environment (e.g., academic or independent research institute, lab, or think-tank).
  • 5 - 7 years related experience preferred.
  • Sound understanding of the climate science rationale for CDR and the scientific principles underpinning one or more CDR pathways.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate research findings in writing (e.g., peer-review paper or reports) and through oral presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with research methods that could be applied to socio-technical research questions, demonstrated through research outputs. Examples of such methods include life cycle assessment, systems dynamics modelling, econometrics, expert elicitation, or cost-benefit assessment.
  • Experience in working in collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams and, preferably, management of such research teams.
  • Experience in leading successful development of research proposals, as demonstrated by success in securing research funding.
  • Ability to plan and organize research projects, prioritize between competing tasks, and manage time to deliver goals.
  • Understanding of the academic research environment, including the roles and typical responsibilities of faculty, post-doctoral associates, graduate students, and project sponsors.
