Description

Bio-medical Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Part-time Fixed Termposition is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Assistant reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI). The position provides research, technical, and project support for multiple interdisciplinary research projects involving biomedical engineering, microfluidics, wearable technologies, point-of-care diagnostics, automation, and advanced manufacturing.

The incumbent supports a diverse range of research activities including experimental planning, laboratory studies, automation and roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing activities, design of experiments, grant development, quality documentation, project coordination, and collaboration with academic, clinical, governmental, and industrial partners. Work is primarily conducted in laboratory and office environments. Occasional flexibility in work hours may be required to support equipment installation, manufacturing trials, proposal deadlines, research activities, or meetings with international collaborators across different time zones.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Research Support

• Assist in planning, coordinating, and conducting multidisciplinary research projects involving biomedical engineering, microfluidics, wearable technologies, automation, and medical device development.
• Support experimental design, laboratory testing, data collection, statistical analysis, interpretation of results, literature reviews, and technology assessments.
• Prepare technical reports, research documentation, scientific manuscripts, presentations, and other materials required for research dissemination.

Automation and Advanced Manufacturing Support

• Provide support for automation projects, system integration activities, and roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing research.
• Assist with prototype fabrication, equipment operation, process optimization, troubleshooting, validation, and quality assurance activities.
• Maintain manufacturing records, standard operating procedures, and technical documentation to support reproducible research and technology development.

Grant Development and Research Administration

• Assist with the preparation of research grant applications, budgets, project work plans, progress reports, sponsor documentation, and other funding-related materials.
• Support coordination of project timelines, meetings, milestones, and deliverables while maintaining accurate project records and ensuring research documentation is complete, organized, and compliant with sponsor and university requirements.

Clinical Research Support

• Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of clinical validation studies by assisting with study design, protocol development, ethics applications, participant documentation, data organization, regulatory documentation, and communication among collaborating clinical and research teams.

Industry and Academic Collaboration

• Support the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships with industrial partners, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions.
• Assist in coordinating communications, meetings, workshops, training activities, and collaborative research initiatives with national and international partners to facilitate knowledge exchange, technology development, and successful project execution.

Technology Translation

• Assist with activities supporting technology commercialization and translation, including preparation of intellectual property documentation, regulatory support materials, quality management documentation, and commercialization planning.
• Contribute to the dissemination of research outcomes through publications, conference presentations, technical reports, stakeholder engagement, and outreach activities.

Qualifications / Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience supporting research or technology development projects in academic or industrial settings.
• Knowledge of biomedical devices, automation, advanced manufacturing, roll-to-roll processing, microfluidics, wearable technologies, or medical device development is considered an asset.
• Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE), laboratory research methods, statistical analysis, and scientific documentation.
• Experience assisting with grant writing, literature reviews, technical reports, and project documentation is an asset.
• Strong organizational and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
• Experience working with industry, healthcare organizations, or international research collaborators is desirable.
