Research Associate, Social Scientist to work
Remote.
ECS seeks a full-time Research Associate, Social Scientist to support NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Office (SERO). While remote work will be considered, preference will be given to candidates local to the St. Petersburg, Florida area who are available for on-site work.
The position will assist SERO Social Scientists with writing social environments, social impact assessments, and other social science related work specific to regional fisheries management actions or assessments in Southeast fisheries, as required by current policies and laws.
Tasks To Be Performed- Serves as a social scientist on interdisciplinary plan teams tasked with developing fishery management plans and provides scientific advice to fisheries management councils and NOAA Fisheries.
- Analyzes secondary data and creates tables and figures describing fishing involvement, with a focus on the community level in order to support the evaluation of the effects of proposed management alternatives and meet the requirements of National Standard 8 of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
- Prepares social environment sections including fishing community descriptions and social effects sections including social impact assessment in fishery management actions in order to comply with Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and NEPA requirements.
- Reviews fisheries management documents to ensure the use of best available social science and compliance with Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and NEPA requirements and NOAA Fisheries social impact assessment guidance.
- Serves as a technical reviewer on fisheries grant proposals, assessments, and disaster spend plans.
- Conducts literature reviews, engages with external partners and fishing community members, and identifies relevant data and information applicable to social environment descriptions and social impacts assessments.
- Conducts other fisheries social science related work as needed.
Deliverables/Due Dates- Descriptions of the social environment and social effects of fisheries management actions will be delivered on time according to agreed upon deadlines set by the IPT or as directed by the task manager.
- Review assignments for fisheries management actions, assessments, grants, and spend plans will be completed by established deadlines.
Government-furnished laptop will be provided.
Salary range: $75,000 - $90,000
Required Skills- Education and experience in social science (such as anthropology, sociology, general social science, etc.).
- Professional experience in resource management policy analysis.
- Strong organizational, coordination, and communication skills, including technical writing.
- Experience analyzing secondary data sources.
- Demonstrated ability to think creatively in terms of approaches to deal successfully with ambiguities and unknowns.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work with raw data sets and generate professional tables and figures to convey descriptive statistics and other scientific information.
Desired Skills- Experience in fisheries management and writing social impact assessments.
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace and statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, Stata, or SPSS).
