Position Description

The Public History Lab (PHL), Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a one-year appointment, starting July 1, 2025.

PHL seeks a Research Associate with expertise in twentieth-century Central and Eastern European History and public history. The incumbent will lead research projects focusing on Ukraine, Eastern Europe, national identity, and memory. Responsibilities include conducting archival and literature reviews, analysis, writing, editing, and overseeing a large international research collaboration. This involves organizing meetings, conferences, managing project operations, coordinating events, outreach, budgeting, and liaising with community partners.

The role requires the ability to work independently on research projects, contribute expertise, and occasionally travel for meetings and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. PhD in History, with preference for Central or Eastern European specialization

  4. Strong operational, administrative, and interpersonal skills, including leadership abilities
  5. Proficiency in Ukrainian; knowledge of Polish, Russian, and Czech is an asset
