A Research Associate (RA) position is available at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Division of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Scott J. Tebbutt, Professor of Medicine of UBC Faculty of Medicine and Principal Investigator and Director of Education of the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St Paul’s Hospital.

Job Description :

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Scientist with a strong background in cardiothoracic transplantation, biomarker discovery, and multi-omics research to join our multidisciplinary research team. The successful candidate will lead projects aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy, predicting transplant outcomes, and addressing post-COVID-19 condition (long COVID). This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of cardiothoracic transplantation, precision medicine, and public health research.

Responsibilities :
  1. Lead and execute research projects on non-invasive biomarkers for diagnosing and predicting outcomes in cardiothoracic transplantation.
  2. Conduct multi-omics research (metabolomics, proteomics, genomics) to identify metabolic signatures related to transplant rejection and outcomes.
  3. Investigate the pathogenesis and biomarkers of long COVID, contributing to therapeutic strategies addressing SARS-CoV-2 persistence, immune dysregulation, and multi-organ involvement.
  4. Collaborate with clinicians, bioinformaticians, and public health researchers to develop real-time diagnostic tools.
  5. Secure research funding through grant applications.
  6. Prepare manuscripts and reports, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present at conferences.
  7. Mentor junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
  8. Analyze experimental data and perform statistical analyses, including omics data.
  9. Stay updated on COVID-19 interventions and models of care.
  10. Conduct literature and systematic reviews relevant to research goals.
  11. Develop research registries and participate in stakeholder engagement.
  12. Lead research team meetings and support broader team activities.
Requirements :
  • MD and MSc degrees with 3+ years of postdoctoral experience in respiratory or thoracic research.
  • At least 5 years of clinical work in respiratory/thoracic medicine.
  • Extensive experience with metabolomics, acute lung injury, and preclinical drug development.
  • Research experience in COVID-19 and cardiothoracic transplantation.
  • High-quality publication record in COVID-19 or organ transplantation research.
  • Experience in biomarker studies for lung diseases.
  • Successful grant application record (e.g., CIHR).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with conflicting timelines.
Duration and Salary :

The position begins March 1, 2025, for 1 year with possible extension. Salary is $68,932 (3% GWI) per annum.
