Job Summary

The research team of Dr. Jessica Liauw (Principal Investigator, PI) in the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Research Associate to apply their expertise to multiple projects concerning high-risk pregnancy, fetal growth, preeclampsia, preterm birth, medical decision-making, clinical practice guidelines (focusing on the prenatal and perinatal period) and the reproductive health needs of marginalized people. The majority of work will take place at BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The Research Associate will support project implementation and perform quantitative data analysis and knowledge translation. The initial focus of this position is knowledge translation of executed research studies.

The UBC Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has training programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and translate it to practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 300 physicians and scientists as well as over 50 administrative, research, and technical staff. Specialty training programs are offered in gynaecologic oncology, maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, as well as advanced training programs in endometriosis, pelvic pain and advanced laparoscopic surgery, family planning, vulvovaginal health and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD (or equivalent degree) and preferably no less than two (2) years of post-doctoral research experience working with reproductive health care or health care access research and policy, or a directly related field. The candidate must have a strong publication record in these fields including having led peer-reviewed, published studies in health and medical sciences journals.

Applicants should have experience in the Canadian health research environment, in addition to the following competencies:

  • Quantitative research expertise;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing (in English). Strong record of developing conventional and innovative knowledge translation outputs directed at scientific experts and lay audiences;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Organizational Status

Reports to the study Principal Investigator and will coordinate with collaborating/co-investigators, OBGYN Research Program managers, clinical, and administrative staff.

Work Performed

Analysis of data and execution of various knowledge translation activities including production of peer-reviewed journal manuscripts, clinical practice guidelines etc.

The Research Associate will be expected to complete all University required training for the position, Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2; 2022 or later) courses, and any other training for compliance with research, regulators, and/or funders.

Consequence of Error

Errors made could influence the ability of the researchers and research staff to meet critical deadlines, compromise research results, and result in the loss of research program funding. Serious errors may result in delay or withdrawal of research papers and reports, loss of credibility for the research lab, the principal investigator and other co-investigators, and the overall program.

The Research Associate is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner and with adherence to the Tri-Council Policy Statement concerning Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. All procedures and data recording/retention must be reliable and accurate, reflecting the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants/contributors must be adhered to. The Research Associate will be accountable to the Principal Investigator, and any governing professional organization, if applicable. A high degree of attention to detail is a required asset.

Supervision Received

Performs most of the work independently. Duties will be agreed upon with the Principal Investigator and often with co-ordination of co-investigators and collaborators.

Supervision Given

Co-ordination of duties with technical and support staff. This will include assignment of task and checks of work, decided on in co-ordination with the Principal Investigator.
