Description

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Research Director of the Section of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

This will involve being present at various Calgary Zone hospitals on different days of the week, with variation throughout the year, depending on research projects and requirements to be on site, such as for patient recruitment and data collection. The sites may include: South Health Campus, Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, and Alberta Children's Hospital. Remote work is possible when no on-site activity is taking place.

The successful candidate will maintain open and frequent communication with the Research Director and OHNS residents who will rely on support from the Research Assistant for administrative/organizational tasks, contacting and recruiting research participants, data collection, processing, and integration with visual systems for distribution. Successful outcomes include the progression of research initiatives as they evolve from hypothesis to publication.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working under the general supervision and direction of the principal investigators and residents conducting the research studies
  • Working different roles on a number of research projects simultaneously
  • Preparation of REB review application/revisions and maintenance of REB renewal
  • Patient recruitment, obtaining informed consent from patients, and contacting patients
  • Data collection (qualitative and quantitative; from charts/EMRs, questionnaires, surveys, patients), database maintenance, and some data analysis
  • Assist with processing data using statistical software to conduct basic analyses of trends in support of a research study
  • Compilation of tables, charts, graphs, and summarized statistics for integration in research presentations and manuscripts
  • Be available by telephone and email while on shift/at work

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred
  • Experience conducting clinical research is preferred
  • Be comfortable with patients and in a clinical medical setting - experience working in a clinical medical setting is preferred
  • Must demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with patients
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies - Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS) 2: CORE-2022 (Course on Research Ethics) is required
  • Completion of other online modules and certificates as required by University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient records
  • Experience with statistical analysis and software is preferred
  • Familiarity with Alberta Health Services EMR systems is an asset
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be open to learning and development, and must be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Establishing and maintaining collaborative and effective relationships with surgeons, residents, and other health care providers (nurses, allied health workers, administrative assistants)
  • Demonstrating strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
